idk if grammatically or poetically this piece has form but I like the story so much I rated it a six as I can envision there, Ireland (I suppose or Scotland) and then here in America. As for the Cocoa Puffs, all I got was Kix with some Hershey chocolate drippings.

Tom, thanks for that extra star and I smile back at the thought of Kix drizzled with chocolatey drops.

This was a wonderful poem about a core memory between a boy and his grandfather. There was a real nostalgic feeling with this one. The details were so vivid and made it easy to imagine the scene. Thanks for sharing!

Your free verse was well done, JLR. I enjoyed reading it.
You set your story up well with the background of how
you came to America and the new experiences. What an
introduction you had compared to your normal big home
cooked breakfast. Love the way Grandpa winked and showed
you what to do with the chocolate milk left in the bowl.
Respectfully, Jan

This is simply great. A history lesson, but one of the interesting ones: based on real people and not on a list of wars and presidents.
And to make it better, it's a personal story.
I also love writing free verse, but in my case it's because I can't rhyme to save my life and because I fell in love with Billy Collins and his poetry when I followed one of his masterclasses (online).
It seems it didn't take much to turn you into an American, which is normal at that age.:)
Good luck in the contest.

    You're welcome. Well, deserved.
I don't write too many poems because I never think I'm good enough, but I'll try to share some.

I love this poem! It is well written, well constructed,
and well presented. You did a great job with the
prompt, as this is a strong contest entry that
should do well. I love the whimsy and reading it
made me smile.

This is a fantastic memory to share in your free verse. The change in how you once lived must have been hard to adjust to, but it sounds like you were very loved. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest. :)

This was a very sweet story/poem! I found myself genuinely caring for the young boy, and I was thrilled when he loved his first breakfast in America. Thanks for sharing. :)

Lol! What a precious memory. I recalled that your grandfather was a rather stern man and you had been through so much after your father's death and moving to a new country. But I'm glad you enjoyed "chocolate for breakfast" for your first American breakfast meal!

I can remember mum cooking bubble and squeak but ours was potato and cabbage fried in the frying, I've made it a couple of times, yum. But I can remember when cocoa pops first came out, a favourite of little boys, great free verse, good luck, blessings Roy

A great description of breakfast in the old country. We are about the same age. I was into Cheerios at the time. If I spent the night at Gramp's, I would have a hot breakfast in the morning.
