I can see all that through your eyes, John. What a lovely picture of your childhood you've painted here, and yes, that picture surely has stored all those wonderful memories inside and out. This is a really fabulous poem about life's lessons. Well done and good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra

My grandmother once said something like that when we saw a similar house. She said she would love to go inside, as it would bring back memories from her childhood. It is nice that you can look and see so much, that it is not forgotten. I am glad you see love. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem.

This is powerful and heartfelt. I see the same thing as you do. This reminds me of my grandparents. It was not a house, it was home. A real home. One that was not a mansion, one that was a place you felt at peace. You knew you were safe. You did not have to lock your doors or worry about someone coming in one of the windows. Thank you for the awareness. I do relate.

Thank for understanding. It's nice to know there are those who can appreciate the value of growing up in those times when happiness and joy weren't measured in material things, but simple and genuine love. Thank you for relating. John

Oh, my goodness, with the holes in the floor, no running water. No bathroom. However, I knew I was safe and sound. You are welcome.

You just perfectly described my home. We didn't have a bathroom either and you could see the ground through the holes in the floor. We did, however, have running water except during times in the winter when the pipes would freeze and burst. Some of those good ole days weren't all that could. But in the grand scheme of things, I had a marvelous childhood.

This was at my grandparents in Russellville Alabama. We often lived with them until my MawMaw died in 1960, when I was seven. The previous house she lived in before dying had never had a coat of paint. Those were the days. Street square dances. Live Auctions. Baths in galvanised tubs. Eating watermelon. The rooster crowing every morning, waking us up. My cousin owned Fame Records in Muscle Shoals, Rick Hall

Wow!...You have some memories, as well. My wife is from Birmingham. She has eight brothers and sisters, and her mother came from a family with eleven children. They all were from Mentone, up on the brow above Valley Head. My wife could write a book. I believe your cousin was quite famous, if I'm not mistaken. famous

Yes, he was famous. I lived in Birmingham until I moved up here. What is her last name? That is where my family lives.

John,

You have really opened a window into the inaccuracies of first impressions. Although this is history, it could just as easily be from imagination. It is true for you; it is true for many; and it evokes childhood memories for all who have known rural poverty in one form or another. Very nice.

I enjoyed your poem about the old house. I can see where it could hold so many memories for you that others would never know. You did a great job of expressing the memories in a heart-felt way. Good luck with the contest.
