Lisa,
This is a good story. You thought that the bunnies in the garden were outside until the bowl crashed and shattered at the door slam. I like the metaphor of the gunshot for the door slam.
Congratulations for placing second in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Joan

You wrote a sad little story, most children that lived on farms can relate to this. But thats just the way it is. Not sure if this is for a contest, Good luck

Thanks for reviewing - no rabbit died though, it was the dish that broke.

Okay, this time you totally fooled me. I was so relieved to see that the bang was merely a dish breaking, and it's a testament to your writing that you had me so worried about a non-existent bunny. You also, not surprisingly, had me looking up Royal Doulton Bunnykins online. Should I be embarrassed to say I'd love to have a China pattern like that now, and I mean for my sake, not just Leah's. That's so my taste! The price tag, however, isn't.

Nice job, as always, and good luck in the contest.

I tricked you!! That proves it must be a good story to get past your flash detector.
Don't be embarrassed about loving the bunnykins patterns. I enjoy eating from my bowl and appreciating the cute picture. Royal Doulton is certainly expensive these days.

Yes, you tricked me, and I didn't need those 10 years I lost when that "gun" banged, before I found out it was just a door. It's not as though I were going to do anything important with those 10 years!!!

I guess I shouldn't be embarrassed by enjoying something as cute as those Bunnykins dishes. My own dinnerware is called "50's Kitchen," and it shows kitchen appliances from the 50's. I bought it in 1995. OK, so not as cute as bunnies, but it does give you some idea of how "sophisticated" my taste is.

Hello, Lisa!
Your flash fiction resonated deeply with me = I have the exact set of which you write! And I can keenly visualize myself being so engrossed in studying the details of the bowl that if startled, I, too, would have dropped it. I also possess a number of the Beatrix Potter baby dishes... Hoping to share with my grandchildren someday.

Thank you for sharing!

Hello LisaMay :)
I enjoyed reading your flash fiction contest entry.
You set the scene well and cleverly mislead the reader into thinking that Granny is watching bunnies through the window!
A great relief and turnaround in imagined plot, when it's the dish that is destroyed and not a real life bunny!
An excellent read!
Good luck in the contest.
Best wishes as always, Debra :)

An interesting twist there at the end. I like it. The shock on the children was out there in front I felt for them to see such a sight. Then to learn it was a dish, a beloved dish, well it was just as painful.

I wouldn't scare kids in a story by killing an animal in front of them.
I'd hate to break my bunnykins bowl. I love it.

It is an adorable pattern. I'm sure it would be enough to cause tears if I owned on of these and had it get broken. This is a very cute flash and I enjoyed it. I would liked shed tears if someone shot a rabbit too. I hate to see animals killed.

I am a softie too. Breaking the plate is bad enough but killing animals is horrible to see.

Good job! I thought Grandpa had shot the bunnies. LOL That picture looks mighty familiar. Maybe Mother had a bowl like that one. I have seen it before. Well done with the story Lisa. Good luck. Nancy:)

Thanks for reviewing. I would never kill an animal in front of children, even in a story.
    I love my bunnykins bowl.

You had me there for a moment with that bang. I figured it out from the ending without recourse to your author notes.

This is really excellent flash, LisaMay..The misdirection was perfect.

My grandkids had similar dishes when they were toddlers. Probably still around somewhere in the kitchen cupboards. I haven't seen bunnies in our area since the pandemic..It used to be magical to watch them nibbling clover at dusk..

I hope you are well and that Andrew is on the road to recovery.

Good luck in the contest.

Thanks for sharing

Blessings Julia

A great flash fiction entry. As usual, you surprise your reader with a surprising ending. Here Grandma is lost in her memories of childhood memories of rabbits being shot and then comes the bang!
Very well-written and surely a contender.
Best wishes,
Mary

Thanks for your review. I hope I didn't traumatise you with thinking the bunny had been shot!
