This is quite the homespun detective tale that brings your characters to this gritty nineteenth century setting. The tone and final solution are all keeping with the mores of the day. Nice job bringing the readers along with a nice description of the areas, people, and action. Owe you a star.

Fully accomplished requirements of the stated contest rules while incorporating a very engaging prose offering. Very good dialogue and delivery of a story that is easy to read and interesting. Success to you in the voting booth!

There was so much I liked about this story. I loved that the main character was young. Young people are often underestimated and this fellow was great at holding his own. I also enjoyed the process he went through that enabled him to solve the crime. This was a really good story!

I wondered why it was so long and now I know. It is nicely written. The dialogue is clear and concise and the descriptions move the story forward in a great manner. I wish you the best of luck in the contest.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

I thought I was reading a published novel. The character development is superb. Placing adult thoughts into a juvenile nearly always works, but this is a step beyond. great work.
"Della, go to do with Deputy Wilkens' murder?" - just curious, is 'go to do' a British colloquialism, or did you mean 'got'?
As an aside, I had a mind to enter the 'ring' story contest, but it could not have been finished before the deadline. After reading 'The Demise of Deputy Dan', I'm glad I didn't break my back on a wasted effort.
Best wishes and good luck.

Thank you for reading this long story. I know 5000+ words stories take a while.

This is sensational. Justin is quite the man. It was captivating and enjoyable. I liked the fact that you the reader didn't figure out what he knew until he revealed it. Brilliant writing!
