This poem is a good review of what happens to most in grammar school. It was the same in both public and Catholic school. I like how you emphasized the commands and the emotion at the end.
Congrats on placing third in the conetest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

1-5-5-9 syllables, right on the mark with the contest directions. Loved the photo with your words... My grandkids seem to have the same experience as I did all those years ago. A lot has changed. The fundamentals seem to have remained the same.

LOL!!! Although you said a thousand words with very little, you stayed creative. And the humor(because it's true we all felt this way, when in school), was through the roof. Keep Writing. And stay connected

This is an excellent poem for this contest, and the picture is perfect. I was a teacher for too many years to count, and this made me think of what a teacher's day holds.

What makes anything a poem? Must it rhyme? I was DQ'd by a committee for writing free verse once in a poetry challenge. They reasoned it didn't rhyme. Then I was DQ'd from a free verse poem when it did. The reason I am asking these questions is if a four line poem should rhyme?

Tom, I appreciate your commentary here. Unless it is stated within the contest rules, I assume it does not have to rhyme. Thanks for reading, reviewing and rating my work.

That sounds like the perfect system to turn children off learning and enjoying school. Your staccato format suits the theme very well. Best wishes for your entry.

Your use of words captures the feel of being in school. In few words, you describe the process of being in school and the routine that takes place. I am sure children can relate to your poem.

As someone who was once a child, I can say that this is exactly what went through my mind in school. I loved the repetition of the word "ring" which signified the beginning and ending of the school day as well as the beginning and ending of your poem. The bold words made me think of how strict and militant some of the teachers were. Your use of onomatopoeias made me feel like I could hear the shushing and the clock as I waited for school to end. Nicely done!

Thank you, Jenifer. It's a lot of information to pack into such a format. I appreciate your thoughtful comments and insight. It's funny to think that many schools still function like this. I believe it was part of the indoctrination and conditioning, especially within the public school system. It was the way students were being conditioned to work in an industrial economy by the powers that be. Thanks for reading, reviewing and rating my work.

Those were the days. For me, many days ago. The same old, same old.
The picture was a perfect pick for this poem. You have a story with a few words in a poem that speak volumes. Thank you for posting.
