I love this story, Mary. Heartwarming, humorous and sad. All the ingredients for a perfect kettle of soup, and a beautiful story. It is to no surprise well written. I loved it!

What a wonderful experience. Gertie found a friend to talk to, and you benefitted from it, also. It's sad that she had to leave, but her memory will stay with you always.

Loved this! Your tale of Gertie was vivid and your dialogue excellent. The one sentence I puzzled on was, "I was and am not a great conversationalist." Maybe it should be "I was not and am not a great conversationalist." Otherwise not sure what you meant, but it didn't subtract from the story in any way. Great work!

This is a great story about friendship, very well done! The age difference did seem that friendship was unlikely, but two souls needed to connect with someone else, and so it was. Exceptional pathos and storytelling. Terry.

Loved your story and what a perfect way to end it. Great idea to use the letter to share how close you two had become. Thank the Lord for people like Gertie. And I smiled at your not being a conversationalist. I think must of us writer-types are introverts who would rather write than talk. Thank you for sharing about Gertie!

Suggestion:
I was close to tears and just shook my head. (nodded?) To me "shook" would be a "no" answer.

Thank you for your kind words and review. I take your suggestion and I see your point. I wrote it to mean that I shook my head in disappointment, but looking at your comment, it came across as me saying no to the neighbor. I will change at your suggestion.
    Thank you.

What a sweet story of two lonely souls finding each other for a short time, Mary. I enjoyed reading your well written story. Your descriptive words--esp of Gertie--made it easy to visualize everything. I'm thrilled Gertie left you a note and gave you sound advice.
Thanks for sharing--this could've been in the true story contest.
Respectfully, Jan

Thank you for sharing this story with us. It was a joy to read and melted my heart. I'm glad there was Gertie in your life.

"You here, Girlie? Come on out," She called out again. (lower case 's' needed on 'she')

Wendy,

How cool! Isn't it funny how some people can come into our lives for just a spell and change it? Change us? Sometimes it's for the better, sometimes it's for the worse, and sometimes it takes a very long time to figure out which it was. Nice. Thanks!

What a lovely and caring story of friendship. She needed you and you needed her- perhaps unlikely friends, but there was a moving depth to humour relationship. Well written and your descriptions of both Gertie and the laundry room are vivid and clear. An enjoyable enjoyable read. Wendy

That was such a lovely story, Mary, and what a character Gertie turned out to be. It was so nice that two lonely people became such good friends. I'm sorry you never got to say goodbye, or be able to tell her you did buy your own washing machine. At least she was safe with her daughter caring for her. I loved the story, well done! :)) Sandra xx
