This seems so unnecessary. They were at peace a year ago. What changed? Personally, I don't believe any of it. Especially what I read or see on television. I don't worry about things I can do nothing about. This is one of them. Next year it will be something equally as absurd. I like the send out a prayer to Ukraine paragraph the best. Strong write.

Wow, you've just about mastered the sonnet with this one! I'm seeing a couple of lines that are out of sync, so if you want to go in and edit before the judging happens, look at "What will become of this beleaguered nation," since it has 11 syllables and loses the iambic pentameter. That third line is rough, too, as far as meter, so maybe you can change both and keep the message whole? Sorry, I know I hate it when people pick away at my work, but the sonnet it pretty strict, and I know I've really appreciated it when someone catches a misstep before I'm judged. Good luck to you; this is really beautifully done, and so on our hearts right now.

Thanks, Laurie, for the critique. That first and third line of the stanza that you mentioned match up with each other, I know there is an extra syllable in each line, but I couldn't get what I wanted without those words. I do appreciate your thoughts.

So timely, so honest, so sad in its end. I can't say I enjoyed reading this poem, but admit I felt the pull towards reaching out to help our fellow humans. I know there must be Russian soldiers conscripted to fight a battle they don't believe is warranted ... they may even have friends and family across the border. I feel as much pain for those being attacked by people sent to do the attacking on behalf of a leader they would rather not follow. It all reminds me of the draft and Vietnam. But it is well written, with rhyme and meter fitting the need. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Terry. You are right on about the Vietnam comparison. I just hope there are some people in Russia who can stop this madman.

You summed up well the tragedy that is unfolding in Ukraine.

Putin has plunged Europe in a war just because he wants to rebuild the Russian empire ..save Ukraine ( Russian soil) from the corruption of the West.

There has been some peace talks while the fighting continues.

If we want an end to the hostilities, Ukraine should not become a member of the NATO but become a free state and be a bridge between Europe and Russia .

I think that s the only move that might convince Putin to retreat.

Many have decided to stay but not all. On the first day of war 33.000 refugees crossed the Polish border

One million refugees are expected in the coming weeks. England has offered to take up to 200,000.

Europe due to the pandemic is on its knees , this war will be the last nail in the coffin.

There is no work .. there are still 3 million Afghan refugees in march.

Winter slowed them down but Spring is around the corner .

Soon they will reach the Mediterranean and will start crossing.

I don't know what they hope to find.. Europe is already on its knees.

Your closing verse packs a
punch.

A very relevant poem in present times. The scenes on T.V are heartbreaking, especially those involving children. Very well written. With regards and best wishes

Thanks, Regina. This puts me in mind of the Cuban missile crisis.

True, I do not understand exactly the Ukraine situation. But my question is, why is a country so big, needs to take by force, a country that is so small in comparison to itself? Have we learned nothing from the past? This is a timely poem. Best wishes.

I guess sometimes those things that we learned in the past get faded, so we need a refresher course. Thanks for the review.

The author's words are heartfelt, descriptive, clear and creative. I
pondered on the theme of this poem and thought about Ukraine
and their fight for freedom. May our prayers be with them. The poem
flows and connects well. The artwork is awesome and compliments
these words.
