You did a great job of telling a complete story in so few words, managing character, setting, and plot in a very believable manner. The dialogue helped to put the point of your story across. I truly enjoyed this.

I don't give those too much--just for those that "strike" me as having something extra!

This sixty-word flash fiction story, Amidst the Shells, has the required word count and defines simply the moral courage that is learned, displayed, and then inspiring.

Bullying is not a good thing ever. Many like to bully, and for some reason they are never winners. They soon realize that it's cruel, not one bit smart when they pick on nonbullies.

Bravo! A few words to share a lesson so many of our younger children need to hear now so they can form a better outlook on how their future should be. Good luck in the contest.

What a lovely description "that one pearl amidst all the broke shells"! I enjoyed your story, with the fine words of the grandpa, and the child's courage in facing the bullies and protecting the girl. Well written. Best wishes for your entry.

Well, I think I see a winner here. People, especially a certain demographic of people, love stories of bullies and people sticking up to the bullies to defend the weak. I sometimes think, many writers were bullied as kids so these types of subjects rings true to them.

Petey will be a good man. He has taken his grandpa's moral advice on board and has become a defender of the weak, even at the cost of injury to himself. Mr. Grayson recognizes the value of Petey's behaviour.
Your story is a charming and effective moral tale, nicely told within the strictures of 60 words.

Yep, Petey's a pearl. Too bad he's one in a million. Way to many people stand by and do nothing when someone else is being hurt. Best of luck in the contest.

Comment from Anne Johnston
This is a great story, for the contest. How often does something like this happen on the playgrounds? So glad Petey tried to protect the little girl. I like your closing lines very much.
