Why not? Who knows better the feel of "Oh, damn!" than a mind racing full tilt and assessing a hopeless situation at the moment when it all comes true.
To be so close and yet unable to make the last small move to safety and wealth is a prime example of opportunity unrealized.
The so-matter-of-fact tone, the self-assurance, of the narrator has to be chilling for the listener unaware of the subtleties of his situation.
So, an interesting little vignette, a dynamite ending and a splendid "Now what?" for the reader.
Clever bit, the hint of a story within this story. A foreshadowing?

As usual, spot on review. Thank you so much for the 6.
Shadows and straight lines, and circles everywhere. Just like the bloated dead dog on the side of the road; maggot infested or IED?
Foreshadowing? Always. Thanks again. Yard.

For a country that is so Islamic, It seems like all of the crooked entertainers
and hyper sexual deviants love to vacation in Dubai. And your creativity for bringing that to life is incredible. So Keep Writing. And don't forget to stop by

Thanks BT. Sorry about the delay, been traveling. The first part is the tee-up about lies written by Eric. I obfuscated the truth of the complete story to provide doubt and confusion to the reader regarding what is real. In the world of clandestine work one can never really know what is true until it is too late.

First off: great title. The early part is maybe too cerebral for me. Once you got into your story with people, I got it, including better understanding of the first part. It is a good story, although it seems like the first chapter of an adventure story. In a sentence about 14 hours, the "we're" was missing a comma.

Hi Yadier, this is not only a great to story, but it's also very well written. Yes, everybody lies about everything and especially when it comes various countries dealing in difficult areas as the one you described. Heads always have to role and rarely are they the right ones. But the public needs to be fed with something believable, and betrayal is never far behind. I loved this. I will fan you. Ulla:)))

This is an amazing story taking me into a world I know almost nothing about. I know we are lied to by our government for reasons that it might be dangerous if we knew the truth and undercover operations would be compromised. I was wondering where this story was going as we went though the story Eric had written. The the character of Paul walks in and it really gets interesting. I almost feel like I need to go back and read the first part again. It is hard to know who one can trust. So much goes on under cover. It is an excellent story and I enjoyed reading it. Especially after Paul enters the picture. I'm out of sixes.

This is by far in my estimation anyway, is a far better story than much of what I have seen on video. It may very well be too good. So much so, that the government may take steps tp keep it off video and therefore not open to widespread distribution.

Thanks, Nomi for your generous and insightful review. Hopefully, the government won't come for me (;-o) Sorry about the late response - been traveling.

You are welcome. I once heard that the reason the government hates thieves is the do not like the competition.

Lol, slapping knee!

Thanks for the response. I have lived long enough (79 in April), to know how things work. The Government hates competition..

This is a well-written and interesting story, Yard. Given the long introduction about the lies people tell, it's hard to know if any of this is the truth, but it makes for a good read. Thanks for giving us a little more insight into life as a soldier in the Persian Gulf.

No worries, Yard. I was away from my computer for a week because of Shingles on my face. Good explanation for the intro. It worked. Loll
-
Ouch! I hope you are feeling better. It is an uncomfortable and embarrassing annoyance. I had it years ago 'butt' not on my face. (;-o)

Thanks, Yard. I was lucky it wasn?t worse. It was too close to my right eye for comfort, but it seems to be good now. I still have a few scabs that will become scars.

Incredible writing here. I loved that you took your time developing the story. Your descriptive ability is engaging, and the emotions run ahead of me as I stalk from one paragraph to the next. I am struck by all that we; the general public do not know--could not possibly know. This one's a sixer if ever I read one! It will not be soon forgotten!

I don't know the first thing about any of those places, but Dubai, and I've only been there three times. And even with the UAE being much more open and liberal, what you see isn't what you get. Those beautiful eyes are obtainable, once they've changed in their locker on the 22nd floor. But when it's time to go, they disappear as fast as they came. Poof! Perceived innocence gone. Poof! And right back again, later. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the six, my friend. Dubai memories - some good, some bad. Hope yours were good.

There were some good times there for me too. But for the most part, I'm just a simple ol' boy who doesn't like mind games and manipulative, money hungry people. I was partners on a horse with Prince Ahmed Bin Salman before he died at 43 from a heart attack. As he considered me beneath him, he didn't talk to me directly, but through an advisor. Yet, he would talk to my then wife, since she was the vice president of Breeders' Cup. Just goes to show that, all the money in the world can't keep a faulty heart ticking. They aren't my kind of people, and I'll never go back.

I certainly hope you're going to continue this story. Being a military spouse for 23 years, I didn't need the GLOSSARY, but there were a couple terms, I had forgotten. You should have warned me about how much tea I would need reading this. LOL
He narrowed his eyes as he remembered the previous night and How Joyanne said Dubai with a lingering smile. (lower case 'h' on 'how')
"I didn't sign that." Paul protested. (comma after 'that')
Eric didn't like admitting it. "Mel and Joyanne." (comma after 'it')

23 years? Shouldn't you have some sort of commendation medal? Lol. Sorry about not warning you regarding tea consumption. This was a three cupper for sure. I drank one (a two bagger) to thank you for the six. Yard.
