This poem speaks so well to our society today. Zero tolerance for everything not just drugs but even people. I love the way this flows so easily and imagery of George Orwell being shocked to see what's happening. Excellent work. Good luck with the contest!

thanks for your review

I agree with your words. Zero tolerance can be carried too far when common sense should be the rule. A small infraction can be blown out of proportion.
Good work in writing and addressing this topic.
Best wishes,
Mary

yeah but zero tolerance is just one of so many Orwellian words that limit people's critical thinking. Another one of my favorite is the macho "Failure is not an Option" which is nonsense when you think about it. All actions have options including that you will fail to achieve your objective. No matter how much you scream "Failure is not an option" you an still fail, and that should be part of your planning.

I like the intelligence behind this poem. I like that you took a word "zero tolerance" and make me think behind the words. My ears have become numbed to the word, but it is a double think word, isn't it? It does limit the truth. As a lawyer, I see the wisdom that our forefathers displayed when they made our judicial system based on precedent rather than codes. The law changes with the facts in order to best find the truth. Zero tolerance is a Code Word designed to deter, but does it?
Well done.

there are so many of these buzz words, weasel words some call them that seem to be everywhere, and no one ever stops and thinks about it - they just utter it because it makes them seem tough, or macho and you end up with absurd Draconian punishment for very minor rule infractions as ever infraction becomes a grade A felony

These words creep into the language and take root. Your choice of zero tolerance was a good one. It is a phrase often uttered without thought and with unexpected results.

thanks that is a good example, my other favorite is "failure is not an Option" which is absurd because "failure" is almost a possibility, and one has to think through what do we do if everything does not work according to plan.
