John, dang, it's Friday, and not a six left, but who thought such a good fiction writer could also do a wonderful tribute to Dr. Seuss? The honorable Humpwhistle once said, "Writing talent is writing talent regardless of the subject or format."

Full disclosure, I don't think that is exactly what he said, but it was something like that. Well done, that is one fine tribute poem. Terry.

He was definitely genius at what he did. Any writer foolish enough to compare himself with a great writer like Mr. Geisel, will have their work cut out ahead of them. It is much more advisable for them to concentrate on their being themselves. In other words "You being you." Enough I think.

I pray you didn't think I was trying to emulate one of the greats, nomi. I apologize if I sound confused, but this was a genuine tribute to one of my (and the world's) childhood favorites. I don't compare and would never try purposely to make such a claim. The gist of this piece can be found in the last stanza. I thank you for your review and am sorry if you misread this piece's intent. Best, JohnC

I am afraid that I was totally unclear in what I wrote. I was trying to say that your tribute was so on point. Of course Dr. Seuss cannot be successfully emulated, and I certainly did not intend to insinuate that you had tried. I am embarrassed that I was not more clear in what I wrote.

All is well, my friend. I would have been devastated if you had thought so. I'm a huge fan of your work and had to be sure you didn't get the wrong impression of this piece. No worries, nomi.

I loved reading your poem. It was a very nice tribute to Dr. Suess. I loved reading the Dr. Suess series when I was a child. Your poem is very well written. The meter and rhyming flow nicely, with no grammar mistakes. I love the last line especially. Today you are you. It makes sense, and a great perspective on just being myself, with my writing. Thank you for sharing.

I loved it and found nothing out of line save for questioning line eight -
know words unsown. Why not known words unsown??? i.d.k. No ill intent intended.
Added thought, being new (13 mos) I didn't think one could repost a piece.

John, a charming and beautifully written tribute to the great author who has captivated generations of children. I enjoyed reading it.
"longstanding does old lines recite,
read pages turn - dawn to night.
It places all that's said sublime;
where clever words are set in rhyme."
This captures Dr. Suess beautifully as well as the last line your wonderful poem.
Best wishes,
Mary

An appropriate tribute to a loved writer! It is true that the earliest poetry we learn is often rhyming and this stays in the mind from early childhood!
Some of today's writing will be tomorrow's classics!

What a profoundly well executed tribute to one of my childhood favorites. Where on earth could we possibly find the likes of Dr. Suess today with all the darn not's. Your words should evoke a thundering applause from the FS ranks, thanks for sharing your talent.

Glad to see this tribute to Dr Seuss. Very well written. I remember when I first joined fanstory I wrote a poem and one reviewer was very scornful, saying "Who do you think you are, Dr Seuss?" apparently because of my rhyme scheme. I remember being quite confused because I hold his children's books in high esteem, and felt that I would be happy to be compared to him! Ah well. I enjoyed your piece.

Thank you, Wendy, for a great review. I'm sorry to hear there were scornful reviews. We all know we can't emulate such an icon, but we simply honor him on his Birthday.

This is a great tribute/birthday reminder to a great
influential author, John. I enjoyed reading it. I remember
his fun books. I don't believe we will see the likes of Dr.
Suess again. I liked the use of rhyme. Your words were
descriptive and told a great story of his work.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Yay! I love Dr. Suess! He was my all-time favorite writer as I was growing up! He always made it better with rhyme! He must've been a kind person to write such wholesome stories and he must've been creative as he always came up with the best messages for children of all ages. Thank you for paying tribute to a wonderful writer!
