This little story is so heartwarming. I really enjoyed the read.
There's so much love between the family members, but grief is preventing them from uniting. Animals definitely have a way of bringing people together - what's not to love?! I reckon that 'stray' cat wasn't really, and Katy's mum knew that pet power would save the day!

Aww! That's so sweet! I like that you created a family problem that needed to be worked out. And naturally any teen, boy or girl, wouldn't want to be bothered by a little one. But a little kitten brought them together. Best wishes in the contest!

You broke the sadness with this one, Jenny. This is family. Everyone exhibits emotions to loss in different ways. Katy by seeking her hero to be comforted and Jeremy by hiding in his room. I know about the hiding. It doesn't work. Yet, you brought a savior with that kitten and a smile to my face. This is a good offering for the -Family- Fiction story contest. Thank you for sharing.

LisaMay I enjoyed your story. I did get a little confused about who was sadder, Katy the daughter or Jeremy the nephew. And about why the bereft family had moved in lock stock and barrel. But the message of the write came through loud and clear.
I think you followed the rules, cleverly leapfrogging over little time to live by opting for the death of a beloved family member.. The writer of the rules left a loophole there!
Cats are wonderful but kittens are the best at bringing joy with their cute appearance and endless antics. The picture reminds me of one of my beloved cats Chewbacca..

I tried putting a collar on a cat. No, that is not strictly true. I have attempted on many occasions to put collars on cats, with the same depressing result. The cat comes home but the collar does not.
Cat collars generally have a pull to release safety feature designed to prevent the collar from strangling the cat should it get caught in undergrowth or whatever.
I have given up the practice collaring my cats as it was on the way to bankrupting me.
But this is a lovely story of how pets can heal sorrow, collared or not.
