The cats were enjoying the holiday too - doing something they don't usually do for a change. Big trucks can be fascinating.
Poetically, I like the stylistic treatment of the repetition. I can imagine this as a kiddies song.

We have six cats outside. When either my wife or I pull into the driveway two of them run out to greet us. Last week my wife ran one over. It was upsetting to both of us. Very nice job on the poem. Good luck in the contest.

Oh dear, my sympathy to you both on such an unfortunate occurrence. We used to have a cat that loved to curl up in visitors' cars (or any car in the drive) and there was many a time when a sleepy head would present itself over the front seat asking to be let out. He had a particular liking for a plumber's van that often called at our place due to tee roots and we'd have to hunt him out of that van, taking as much as 20 minutes to find him and
hoik him out, under protest too I might add.cheers
