I really must read through the book of Job, reading this has shown me just how old some of our idioms are. It's strange that most disbelievers will still call on God when they are in danger, or need His help. That tells me deep down they do believe in Him, even though they deny it. This was great, Helen, I'm going to write down all the idioms that have been featured so I don't double up. You've really started something! Have a wonderful Christmas, my friend, and a happy, healthy 2022. Love and hugs, Sandra xxx

Thank you so much for reviewing this post, Sandra. And it's totally fine if idioms are double-up. Each writer will put their unique spin and may give a different perspective/history. Yes, it's an amazing thing how people hunger for the Lord without knowing it. Merry Christmas!!

"Biblical Idioms: Job" gives a wonderful review of this man's mode of expression. I really appreciate your telling of his sayings that have been familiar for a long time but I could never have stated their origin.

Thank you so much, Marie! You always bless me with such encouragement. I was so amazed these three all came from the same chapter! Hugs!

There were many times my grandmother would say, "Do you think I have the patience of Job?" Guess that tells you something about me and my brothers when we were growing up. Very interesting piece.

I don't think anyone has the patience of Job - especially not children! Thanks so much for sharing that and reviewing, Judy!
    Hugs!

It is interesting that these idioms continue on in our speech today. I know each of these expressions but couldn't have said where they came from, except for 'the patience of Job'. Another interesting write Helen.

Sorry to be so tardy. I've been so sick. I'm still struggling along. This is fabulous, Helen, and since Job is one of my favorite books of the Bible, a necessary six. You did a great job. I agree with Job, and Handel:

I know my redeemer liveth, and he shall stand on the earth in the latter days.

Sending you my very best today as always,
Sally XOs

An amazing number of the expressions we use can be traced to the Scriptures. I wasn't aware of some of the ones you've detailed in your excellent writing. I love that song!

I sometimes thought I'd research why Russian is called Cyrillic and now you have saved me the time! I am amused when atheists call on God. Your inspection of Job for idioms to share reveals much we take for granted without knowing its source. Fascinating.

Lol. I'm glad I could de-mystify that for you. Actually the original alphabet that Cyril and Methodius created was called Glagolitic but it didn't take off. You can see similarities to Greek in the alphabet. Probably the early alphabets were more like Old Church Slavonic. Appreciate the great review, LisaMay! Hugs!

You've covered many interesting idioms in this post, Helen. I've used many of them in my life time, and although I think I knew where the one "the patience of Job" came from, I never understood the context of any of them. Thanks for sharing.
