Reese,

You have written a meritorious poem of substance, balanced with humor. Your philosopher friend had a lot to teach about relaxing and enjoying life. Wisdom can be hard to find these days. No doubt the supply was reduced by Jack's passing. Best of luck in the contest.

You have now reached "Christmas Card Level" with the second "6" in 3 days. Your support is appreciated! Jack was the homebuilder of my house - still stands 28 years later. Have a good week!

Twenty-eight years? Miraculous . . . and pshaw. The only legitimate remaining historical account of my home states that it was purchased in 1765. (And some of it was built with salvaged timbers, evidenced by extraneous notches and roman numerals in the attic frame.) I've actually started a piece using it as a metaphor for how societies hold together (or fall apart). My brain has been too befuddled to do justice to it all, but I hope to revive it soon. It should garner at least four reviews. :-)

I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I do have a piece of paper from a university, I am a veteran including Far East service, I am married to an actual Mayflower descendent, and business took me to 25 countries (I added Ireland on my own), and with all of that, I have NEVER EVER heard of Roman numerals on any timber. Please, tell me more and send a picture b4reese@yahoo.com. That is amazing and worthy of a fine writing in the your fan future!

I'm not sure if I can make it to the attic to get a photo. Post and beam construction often made use of Roman numerals to know which mortise and tenons lined up for assembly. The attic ones are currently the only ones exposed, although I have one board salvaged from the old barn out in the garage that has the numerals, but it's not a timber.

The pictures in the article serve the need. Perfect. Thanks. Speaking of pictures, full disclosure, I do not have a picture of Jack, so that is me on the front porch of the house that Jack built. My house.

I like the philosophy behind your poem. I never thought of it has twist turkey sand trees, I like that concept a whole lot. Your poem rhymed, made sense, and it made me laugh. Very nice job. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Thanks, pardner, I like nothing better than knowing that I made somebody laugh. Gives life meaning. Been comin' through your great state for many years. I married a Massachusetts yankee (I had been drinking) who I met whilst working in New York City (must have been crazy drunk!) Moved to Texas, but we would drive thru with the girls every year from the Houston area. Loved the Amish country. Now, we are retired and stay in RV parks in beautiful PA. My favorite western movie of all is the Duke's, The Cowboys. Now, I've gotten some reports of laughter from those who read my "Should Men Date? Seriously?" piece. Just 3rd down in my portfolio. Get yourself a cold one and enjoy the ride. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Reese Turner in Texas

This is a fun poem highlighting all the great things in those four weeks and how to enjoy them, according to Old Jack. He's a pretty smart old boy. Thanks for sharing his wisdom.
