This is the kind of story that many empty-nesters can relate to. The narrator is fortunate that his daughter was going to live within walking distance of him and her mother. Many of us don't have that closeness. I'm glad he took a moment to figure it out. Great story. Good luck in the contest.

I truly appreciate what you?re saying. Allen was lucky that Steph stayed close. My sister moved to Canada, so i really feel as you must. Rod

This is so nice, it reminds me of the time I gave my elder daughter away in marriage, I wasn't ready to do that yet, but with much prayer and God's huge help, I eventually woke up one morning my ownership broken. So, beautifully written, perceptive and wise, well done, blessings Roy

A well written story for this contest, good luck. I know it is posted as fiction, but it sure does have some rings of truth, but good fiction does. You have woven the story faced by many the last couple of years in a good narrative. The dad's acceptance is well done.

Comment from Susan Newell
This story is so well written, with such good life lessons, that it reads like non-fiction. Everything in the story is eminently credible, from playing canasta, to having the real estate agent take the photo, to the dog adding to the spread-out family. Well done.

It's never easy to move on, no matter what side of the move you're on. But thankfully for this fictional family, they will all be living conveniently close. Thanks for sharing another fine story.

well, "Dad", you went through all of your feelings and came up with the proper decision - a little self-diagnosis always helps. very good.
And walking distance? The best of both worlds!
This is a very realistic non-fiction story conveying, very nicely, mixed emotions.
