Isn't it interesting that no matter how rich or poor children are, they always find ways to have fun. Their imagination is full to the brim and they let it run free. . .no wonder we all longs for those days of our youth. Congratulations on taking 2nd place in this contest. :)

This poem, Growing Up in the Sixties, brings those now great memories of kids and our endless imaginations taking us from game to game and courageous battles with friendly enemies. Fun stuff.

Isn't that the truth? When we were kids we played outside ALL day. We played games all day long that we made up ourselves. Hours on the merry-go-round at the playground playing pick up stick where you had to reach the stick on the ground from the seat you were in as the merry-go-round went round and round. Kids don't know what real fun is and what it's like to play so hard all day that we fell asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow at bedtime. Those were the days! Your poem brought back happy memories. The picture you chose to use reminds me of playing jump rope and all of the rhymes we said to it. Good luck with the contest. I think this sounds like a winner.

Thank you for this wonderful review. I think kids today miss out by spending all their time looking at screens...oh well. I hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday.

Those were the days. We could make a game and have simple fun, I grew up in Toronto Ontario Can. It was safe to play on the streets. The neighbors were nice. In the summer I went to my Grandmothers cottage by lake Simcoe it was the country then now it's totally different. You created a cool rhyming poem that tells a familiar story. Well done! Laura

Amen to those memories, life goes on and it's good that we have something to look back. "Growing up on Chicago's south side,
poor, but happy I was as a kid.
I love to think back on those halcyon days,
wonderment was found, in all that we did." Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest.

Yes l remember those games and how we would play house with our dolls. This generation has tAken all our joys and freedom away. It sometimes briings tears to my eyes. I also remeber our wonderful christmas when we got up and saw our bowls full of candy. My mom worked hard. She had a canteen and had to bring cases of pop in the house so they wouldnt bust. The bottles were in wooden boxes. How l loved it home. It moves my emotion. Good luck you did a great job.

A childhood filled with lots of interesting activities to stretch a child's active imagination -it's such a shame our kids today spend so much time on screens-

Hello Author,

You did a great job of placing the reader in those halcyon days of your youth. So often kids can't wait to grow up. Then they grow up and find themselves wishing they could return to those days when life was simpler, or so it seemed.

I'll make some suggestions. These are suggestions only--take or shake.

Please capitalize your title properly. In the voting booth, I don't even review entries when words in the title are not properly capitalized.

Is 'that' necessary in the first line?

kickball, one word

red light, green light

The "pump" was opened on days that were hot, -- days that were hot = passive ... even in poetry, try to avoid passive tense ...

Those are my only suggestions. This poem flows smoothly after the first stanza. Word choice was excellent.

Well done, write on, and good luck in the contest!
Lana

I grew up in the sixties, also - but in San Francisco. Same thing - out all night, playing in the streets. This one brought back so many memories. Thanks for that.
