Now we have something in common, My father died in 2003 and out of us kids there was five left. Two girls and three boys, my mother being a proud warrior left the obituary to the pastor of the family, which was my little brother. However, he really never knew my father, not because my dad was not there for us, but because he was a momma's choice. He named every thing he thought, but as far as the true person my father was, he excluded and that meant his side of the family. So many of his relatives were hurt to the core because of this. Then ten years later my mother died and her some of her family members was excluded. Family secrets hurt the following generations after them. This leaves an unharmonious tingle and a tragic remorse memory of who you knew. So just saying I understand. Thank you for sharing this piece, because it reaches wounds of many

THANKSSSSSS! Nice to see you again.

Poignant story about the simmering tit-for-tat resentment you relate.

The incident I relate had no such ramifications, fortunately.

Still, I wish I'd seen my uncle's reaction. He knew my sister had no human children. The name "Sweet Pea" was a giveaway for anyone reading it.

My mother would hold a grudge so tight it screamed for mercy. She had a loooong memory.

In truth, I can't be sure if my mother was in on this--my sister was intent on listing her pets and the paper automatically puts siblings last--regardless, it was certainly in character for my mother to construe such a stunt.

This is called sibling envy, such a thing is only known or seen by the inner circle called family. Thank you so very much.

The cat in the picture looks so much like my first cat Huckleberry. He was exactly that color. People seem to be tailoring their obituaries to suit themselves these days. That is fine with me. Why shouldn't a person mention surviving pets? What a story. An obituary fit for the New York Times. judi

It is a funny story. I have no problem with people wishing to remember their pets. Yes, the name would have been a giveaway. judi

The actions of Robert must have grated on your mother heavily if, after 49 years, she wanted to hit back. So she finally got her shot and did it with style!
Revenge can be sweet at times.
Regards,
Mary

You did a good job with this post, Liz. I enjoyed reading it. I like that the dog and cats were included in the obit. I have cats now and refer to them as my niecelets.
Respectfully, Jan

I know we are to turn the other cheek, but sometimes it feels so extra special to offer a little payback to someone who has slighted us in the past. Well done!

Always, Carol

LOL. I'm guessing your mother was a pill to deal with. Although, I must admit, I bet there was never a dull moment while waiting to see what she might come up with next. And, I bet everyone thought twice about crossing her. Thanks for sharing.

What a piece of obituary! Wonder what kind of reaction your uncle had when he saw the obituary. Mentioned last behind cats and dogs. Ouch! That hurts!:):) Have a great Sunday!

I don't know what to say about that.
But. I have now reached 20 bump up
Fame.
First page exposure.
And the well accepted unrealisation.
Money buys all.
So all my good poems only needed money to be recognized.
I now retire back to my 2 reviews and anonymity.
It was good while it lasted.
Thank you for listening to my oximoronic ramble. :-))Z.

I can imagine the satisfaction derived from this published obituary. It has certainly provided the last laugh. That lack-of-love-and compassion brother belonged in the dog house for sure! :-)

LOL Did the brother realize that his name appeared behind the animals. If he was aware that his niece, Nancy had no children, or that you only had three, he probably got the message.
