It's obvious that you had it all figured out long before this past week happened, which I think there are a lot of us who made the same predictions. Of course, a little more foresight and planning could have made the transition much simpler and saved lives. Thanks for sharing.

Well written. Your note is interesting and adds depth. I am curious why you differentiate the reaction of Democrats and Republicans. The last few days have been awful, but predictable.

It is a terrible tragedy for all the allies, and those left behind by the USA. Your notes are indeed forward thinking. Too bad those in charge didn't do something years ago.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Good comments of the Afghan War, these people have been at wat with each other for thousands of years. We thought we could change all that and we were wrong. The present fiasco is a deplorable example of poor training, poor planning and No planning.
We should have just killed Ben Ladin and gone home.
Hope and pray all our Americans get out of Afghanistan alive.

This short piece is well written and tells a story very well.
With so few words the meaning is clear.
Well done with your writing and your prediction.

I agree about the war in Afghanistan. My beef is with the withdrawal of the troops, left in the processing of the Taliban. This is completely unacceptable. It's not the Taliban's job to get our troops home, it's the commander-and-chief's job! Add, he trusts the Taliban! Who, besides him, trusts the Taliban? Our president lives in fantasy land. He wants an extension past August 31st. The Taliban has repeatedly said no, and claimed no responsibility for any repercussions after the deadline. I think we are all old enough and wise enough to know what betrayers look like. I've already contacted my state representatives to voice my outrage.
Read my latest: Sundown on Kabul.

Interesting piece. Reminds me of a Viet Nam era protest song, "We're The Cops Of The World."
It was straight forward, but not very informative. The language was simple, the message stayed on point. The feeling throughout was consistent.
I wish there was more detail or at least formulation of why you found yourself right.
Thank you for sharing.

This was just a thought I had on a bad news day in 2004.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Rikki! It's good to hear from you. I like how you listed the "Russians, the British, the Turks, the Romans, and the Mesopotamians." We really should not have gotten involved and now we made a mess and left a mess.
Still of all the U.S. intervention, I'm thankful for the Americans who made a difference in the lives of South Korea. Just look the difference between North and South and you can see the difference. Let's keep praying for those who are left behind.

The reason Korea is different is that we left an Army and Air Force there.
-
And in Japan, too! If the troops were removed, you can be sure the North Korea will invade just like they did in 1950.

True.

Bingo! Hats off to you for concision and prescience. And for common sense--history, alas, continually repeats itself. Wry remark about bad and worse. Glad to see you back! Cheers. LIZ

You were not alone in prediction. Many others who have studied history of occupations and wars in foreign lands saw this coming. Yes, people have a sad tendency to repeat the failures of history, believing that they will do it right, because, they are different.

Politicians right, left or in the middle think their war will be different. Reminds me of expecting a different out come.
