Horrors! Gold medalist devolves to bronze17 total reviews

Hi Liz,
This is different from your usual comical stories, and nicely penned. I have been enjoying the Olympics immensely, especially the women's soccer and volleyball. I watched the USA beat Australia this morning, 4-3, for the Bronze Medal. It was a good game, but not as many tears as I had expected. Earlier games showed a lot of emotion. It was nice to see many of the American players walking around to shake hands with the Australian team. Tonight, Canada takes on Sweden for the Gold Medal. I know I won't get to bed until at least 1AM. Maybe even later. I've also enjoyed watching the Russian women's volleyball team. I don't think they're up for a medal, having lost to Turkey and Brazil. But they played so well. One of their players is only 17 years old... Arina Fedorovtseva was born on January 19th, 2004. But what a wonderful player at 6' 3" tall. She has great ability for someone so young.
Hugs,
Kimbob

As you must know by now, Simone Biles got the bronze on the balance beam!

I have watched all athletes break down irrespective of the fact they have won to lost. For athletes, the Olympics are the ultimate test of their worth. So, I don't blame Suni for breaking down. But she has proved that she is one of the best in the world! Kudos to her! Interesting deviation from your stories from your daily life. Were you also gymnast in your halcyon days of your youth ?? Cheers to that!

Simone Biles, who abruptly droppped out of last week's team competition, came back yesterday and got the bronze on the balance beam!

Yes, of course we've been watching the games, having pride in our girls performance in the pool, for our population of 24million we don't do too badly. NZ only have about 4 million. Yes, one has to feel for these girls. But I feel for the ones that don't medal, but work their hearts out anyway, just to be an Olympian is a profound honour. Beautifully written, blessings Roy

Yes I know, she?s a young girl, too much pressure.

Suni has performed with poise and skill beyond her years. Imagine, being there as an "alternate" and being thrust not only in the limelight, but taking the place of the most lauded gymnastics star known in the world! Her gold was triumphant, her bronze equally so. Love the Olympics...love watching it. Sad when being the "Third best gymnast in the WORLD" is such a hit on any athlete's self worth!-- Glad she found her smile. She has SO much to be proud of!--Karenina

I stayed up late to watch them re-air it. She is an example of all that is right with advocating for one's own mental wellness! (AND still another Olympic medal!)--Good for her!

No athlete who trains year round to compete is every going to be happy with a bronze metal, but it's such an honor just to be there representing their country, and bronze is nothing to sneeze at. Thanks for sharing.

I know sports at all levels is stressful for athletics, but some thing as world known as the Olympic has to be unbearable. I can't imagine the pressure. I've mentioned I haven't followed them, but thank you for sharing.

Liz,
I guess that's why it's pros making those judgments - I'd give everyone a gold because I can't even imagine the skill, time, practice, and heart that must go into that work. And I do mean WORK.
Well, maybe not - but I'd WANT to. Thanks!

Hello Liz.
I have never understood athletes being disappointed in any medal in the Olympics. The bronze medal means the athlete is the third best in the world at that given time. There's 7 billion people in the world. I would love to be third at something.
Simone Biles is going to be competing in the balance beam as well. That was on the radio this morning.

These young women are definitely a strong breed. Their training and the tremendous stress on their shoulders to succeed is unreal to most of us. I give every girl who goes out on those mats kudos and a standing ovation for being who they are.

You can't help but admire all the athletes who spend so much time training for their events. How painful to find you haven't been placed. But when you see them come in at 4th and 5th, that is no shame! To know you are the 4th best in the world, has to mean something? I'd be pleased to be placed 50th! lol. :)) Sandra xxxx
