Hi Missy,
This poem uses line breaks and metaphor, and a little pun to show the effects of spousal abuse. It ruins the lives and souls of the abused. It makes them show a lie to the outside world, which probably makes the situation worse emotionally.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

Oh, Missy, I don't have a six to give you for this beautifully written poem. I can see why this picture spoke to you, and compelled you to write yet another wonderful albeit sad love poem. You are so good at those. How glad I am that you're back with us on this site. Ulla xx

In order to safeguard the most precious and vulnerable parts of ourselves, the creation and wearing of a protective mask become absolutely necessary. I find it interesting that many of history's most accomplished poets have written at least one poem dealing with the wearing of some sort of mask.

Hello my friend, it?s good to see your name here in reviews.
I did not know that about poets writing about masks. :)
Your review gave me joy!

Yes. One of my favorite poets, Paul Laurence Dunbar, wrote a poem entitled "We Wear The Mask" which talks about the need black folks had to wear a mask to hide their true feelings about being oppressed. I later wrote a poem titled "The Mask Has Been Removed" It eventually became the title of one of my published books.

Is this poem in your portfolio?
-
No sadly it has apparently aged out and is no longer viewable. If you would like to view it, i can DM it to you.
-
Yes please
-
One question. Are you familiar with the poem by Mr. Dunbar. If not I will post them both his and mine.
-
I?d love to read both

Hi Missy, I know just what you are saying my sweet friend...so many will relate...
a true love given...just to be held out of reach...taunted...used...drained of your worth...
as you said...a heart shattered
a peace stolen...a mask is put in place...
a pain felt...but no longer seen...
it was all a lie...
very well written sweet girl...I love your poem you...
and I can see why the picture pointed you that way...well done...love you...Linda xxoo

My walls are covered in masks of every kind...years of collecting - because I feel too that many hide behind masks and we never know the real soul.
The artwork is splendid and your poem is wonderful.

Your picture choice and well thought out words pair nicely. I like the color scheme, the picture, and the formatting of your lines. Your lines and words flow smoothly with a good, but sad, message. Thanks for sharing.

Wow!
This is a poignant and well-delivered message.
It hits me hard as I am trying to date a Columbian girl right now and I am struggling with my own mask. She asks me for money and I am foolish enough to help her with things, and I smile foolishly and tolerate the abuse. I am going to put a stop to it tonight. Anyway, I love your poem, and the picture you selected is really cool. Where did you get it?
Best,
Dave

Oh goodness! I hope you look in the mirror tonight and honestly know your worth. You?ve a brilliant mind and extremely articulate so do not accept being used by anyone. (Sorry just my personal thoughts since you opened up to me)
The picture I found on a site of public domain photos.
Thank you Dave for being such a sweet soul with me.

In one way or another, I believe we all hide behind a mask.... Hiding our true emotions or afraid to share the tidal wave that lies behind it. I always love how you show emotions so well with your poetry.

It's only Monday and I'm already out of stars, which tells me that they just don't give us enough. Then, when I read words that describe so many, most hiding behind a mask of some kind. Afraid to let true feelings show, and unable to change them. So few words, that say so much. Thanks for sharing another fine poem. :-)
