Brilliant depiction of the state of mind I can easily imagine. My sister does not have Alzheimer's but did lose her short term memory after a serious fall so I understand the difficulty in not being able to remember the recent past. This is a very artistic depiction of this dilemma. I enjoyed all the clever rhyming.

My sister is amazing in her ability to cope with this major inconvenience. She is always cheerful and sweet and a genuine pleasure to be around.

This is a well written sonnet about not letting despair take over and keeping hope for the new day. You chose your artwork well. It gives a feeling of loneliness and confusion.
Congrats on your third place finish in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy

Hello Kahpot.

I write lots of rhymed and metered poetry. The meter of this poem is quite good. You have constant meter and I perceive it is of the iambic foot. I have a way of checking my own meter when I write. I call it a finger tap method. I tap a finger for each syllable and I do it in a rhythm as I read along the poem. it really helps me to make sure my meter is constant.

As you say in your notes the poem expressing a feeling of oncoming Alzheimer's. Your words make that interpretation very clearly that is such a difficult thing to contend with. I heard an interview once in which a spouse was discussing the disease of her husband. She referred to it as a long goodbye.

The text in your poem it's very well done as it expresses the perceptions surrounding Alzheimer's.

Good luck in the contest.

Robert

Thank you very much, I am trying to lean meter-(among other things-like poetry) I will try your suggestion and see if it helps or makes sense to me, I do read my work often before posting but still manage to get it wrong, apparently I have fluked it a couple times, your help, encouragement are very much appreciated****kahpot

    You're very welcome.

Another thing to do is record yourself reciting the poem and then play it back. There is one other thing you can try. Have someone else read the poem out loud to you.

Hi Kahpot,

Your poignant poem of the loss of memory due to dementia is heart breaking. Your descriptions of the clouded eyes not recognizing loved ones is so hard to deal with for all concerned. The loss of self care and self reliance is so undignified that the only way to get through this is to just love and respect the person regardless of their condition.

Your words are a literal window into the soul of dementia.

Well written and perceptive,

Always,
Senyai

I think your metre is top of the line already. This flows along like a river rushing to the sea. Beautiful rhymes, and poignant illustration of dementia. I imagine it's most difficult.

Very, very well done, kahpot, and a strong contender in this contest. :)

I really like the idea, the rhyme and just the whole poem! Yes indeed, memories are just something we hold on to as if it defines us, while in truth we are different people every day - and we choose to be one or the other each passing moment. Good job, love this!

Kym,

Wow! Amazing technique and message. I did not realize you were writing about Alzheimer's when I first read this.

Your internal rhymes, end rhymes and depth is extraordinary.

This is indeed a sad disease - it is a thief. Little by little memories are taken away. And what is left is but a shadow of what once was. You have captured the feelings of helplessness with your well chosen words and artwork.

Alzheimer's is such a horrendous illness--basically robbing its victims of SELF and grieving their helpless families and friends. Your skillfully-written, vividly descriptive poem captures the sadness, grief, and confusion it exacts.
