This is very sensitive. It's easy to think in retrospect of what we might have done differently, in your case helping Eve and Clifford. They sound so different, the other children would have found them interesting. Maybe they moved on to a place where their western attire might have fit in. Excellent details about the two. You must have quite a memory. judi

Very nice story Bill. I can understand your feelings now at Ken and Eve's heartfelt attempts to fit into the local crowd. Especially for Eve. The boy was a victim too, but he fought back his way--anger. I feel the same regret though when I remember a kid like Eve. Maybe I could have helped, made friends. But we were kids, we see much clearer now as adults.

Your observations of Eve and Clifford bring to mind some of the students I shared classes with. It seemed I was always evaluating someone, by the manner in which they responded to the teacher's questions. Some were quite confident while others suffered such shyness, it was embarrassing to watch. But, the thing was, we thought these thoughts and didn't reach out in any way at that moment in time. So, looking back we see ourselves where we fell short of friendliness.

I think we all wish we had a time machine to go back to fix the stupid stuff we did as kids. It kind of hurts to look back on it now. Very nice job. Keep'em coming.

The way you described Eve's dressing makes me wonder if they were from a strict religious home. That could be why they were not comfortable with fitting in. Clifford acted out to get others to see him and Eve wanted to break free from the restrictions that her home life put on her, but she didn't have anything in common to share with the other girls. Just an opinion. Sally

I appreciate your compassionate heart. I think if they grew up on a farm, they gained some confidence working hard and learning to accomplish things physically daily. They're probably fine beyond the socially awkward days of school years.

This is an honest and touching write Bill as these children were viewed as outsiders and your empathy now as you see a different picture is heartwarming. I have never been to a rodeo, it sounds like a lot of fun, I enjoyed your story, love Dolly x

This was an agreable and interesting vignette on outside youngsters, and how hey have to try and fit into school life. When I was young, our school took in the circus children for a few weeks each year when the circus was playing in our region. To us they seemed very exciting, and we were always sad to see them move on, and happy to see them back the following year.

School and fitting in can be difficult for sure especially when Eve and Clifford were also struggling with grades. I'm sorry Clifford resorted to being a bully though because that makes fitting in even worse. Maybe the lessons learned at your school will help them in their new school.

Bill,

I think most kids are far too caught up in surviving those school days themselves to be able to look around and rescue someone else. It's like on the airplane when there's a problem. First make sure you can breathe the oxygen being offered YOURSELF before you try to help administer it to anyone else, right?

Thanks!

It just when we*re older we realize how little it takes to make a big difference.
