I am ignorant as regards the game; that said, I get the gist and feel the excitement/confusion--you skillfully render the drama of the scene--stunning ending!

I love these stories about time spent with your granddaughter, Jan. They will be great memories for her for years to come, and maybe she'll carry on the tradition.
You've done a wonderful job of describing the plays and the emotions.

I have actually seen the 'drop-dead' rule in a game, but they did allow the child to finish batting. LOL Granddaughters are so much fun. Grandsons are two, but I raised four boys. I am really enjoying doing things with girls. LOL

Yes, barbara, I have witnessed that rule before, too, but never in the middle of someone's at-bat. It was made all the worse because her dad was the umpire. Jan

That's so funny, I was always of the opinion, game is finished when it's finished, but I didn't think it could ever finish in the middle of a batter up, it's similar to cricket, they do have a beginning time, but baseball is not like football, how incredibly interesting, thanks for sharing Jan, blessings Roy

Yes, I think the game should be over when it is over, but what do I know? Thanks for your kind words. Jan

Interesting story, and your son-in-law was obviously a stickler for the rules, even at the expense of his daughter finishing her time. Well written - I am learning more about this game.

Wendy: We all love baseball and softball, but all the ladies hate the drop-dead rule. Jan

A lovely story of time spent with your granddaughter. The description of the softball game and the artwork that enhances the piece, make the story an easy and enjoyable read. Nicely done.

Are You Kidding Me? Is a good chapter in the story about a nanny and her granddaughter Alexis. Her story has beautifully provided insight for the uninitiated to the game of softball at a youth level. One of the concerns that often show up in these games is inadequate umpiring. Often the umpires are teenagers themselves and they tend to lack discipline and responsibility. In this story, you provide some humor both to a specific day and time where the game was called in the middle of an at-bat that was funny and sad for the one we didn't get to bat. Thanks for sharing Jan. Embrace the love from above!

Well I learned something new from this. I did not know the drop dead rule. I had to Google it and was amazed what the rule was about. My son was involved in little league for six years and I only remember the slaughter rule, in the youngest leagues. I wonder how many times it's ever been used? Sounds like no one at that game knew!

Actually, blondie560, many of us knew about it, but none of us had ever seen it used right in the middle of a bat. Normally, it is called right after the at-bat is completed. Jan

You are great with the baseball terminology. I enjoyed reading and reviewing your work, Jan. I believe Alexis' father handled the decisions of ump in a non-partisan way. Good for him. Thanks for sharing this fun story,
Respectfully, Jan

Yes, Jan. To be fair to him, it would not have mattered who was at bat. Just too bad for his family life that it happened to be Alexis - lol. Jan
