I laughed along with this story because it reminds me of things that my own children did when they were young. Ask them if they have their homework, lunch, project, etc and told yes I have it. Then comes the phone call: Hello, mom I forgot my gym clothes. It wasn't all the time but it was usually when the tween years came around and they thought mom was dumb and they knew better! Thank God they outgrew that!

For sure, blondie560. The team awarded me the "Grandmother of the Year Award" for being willing to endure bare footedness during the game - LOL! Thanks for reviewing.

I enjoyed your story, Jan. You did a great job recounting the events. Everything flowed well and made sense. Your inclusion of details makes readers feel like they are right there watching this story unfold. I was thrilled with the ending.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much, Jan. I was beginning to think nothing was going to happen - extraordinary, or otherwise. Jan

This is a wonderful story about a shared experience between granddaughter and grandmother. It sounds like you have a close friendship. You're dialogue is perfect.

One thing though, you started out in past tense and then switched to present with this sentence, "We arrive in the ballfield parking lot..." and then switched back at "When we got to the dugout..."

Nothing is ever perfect and when that happens it's up to those in charge to do their best. Lucky for Alexis that you are a size nine otherwise she'd have been benched and never get to throw that ball to third.

What an interesting story - and so normal!! Your storytelling was excellent, clear writing with sufficient detail but not excessive. Well done! Thank you for posting.

My wife spends a lot of time taking our grandchildren to their respective functions, but they're not quite old enough to compete yet. But I'm glad you are sharing her life's involvement, neither of my parents ever watched a game of cricket of footy, or a competitive table tennis game, whereas my friend's folks did. This is so precious, well done, good nana, thanks for sharing Jan, blessings Roy

Thanks so much, Roy. My dad never saw either my brother or myself play ball, but he rarely missed any of his grandchildren's home games. My mom rarely missed any event her grandchildren participated in. Jan

We went to every game our children played in, (rain or shine) and now our grandchildren. My parents never came to a single game I played.

This Chapter of the Biographical Non-Fiction, of about a softball experience, speaks about a cleat and a croc, a family event, routine act, child, humour, through a good taletelling, plot development, dialogues and characterization; ends with a happy wish; well said, well done, thanks for sharing this. This is a sweet memory that you've penned and I like the way you presented it in a letter. Your granddaughter will thank you one day, if she already hasn't. Well written and enjoyable.

I love the heartfelt story of family, softball and human emotions. This captured the genuineness of the speaker and the human side to life. I thought it was quite deep that you pointed out the fact Alexis didn't question her mom about having already went through the list of things to do. Beautifully written and very well expressed.

A Cleat and a Croc Is a lovely short narrative about a Nana and her Alexis. Told in the true fashion of Nanahood. We got every question concerning every possible need for the softball game. Great questions. Mom asked the same questions, great job mom. Only Alexis could reveal the turbulent final answer. One cleat! The way in which you tell the story enlightens your readers to know the love that resides between Alexis and Nana. We're all glad she got the ball and fired it to third base. We all say, a hearty thumbs-up! Thanks for sharing. Embrace the love of about!

Thanks so much, Dr. Nad. One day I will post a picture of Alexis in uniform and write something about one of her softball games. Jan

Grandchildren are great, aren't they? I have five of them and I too have an Alexis who is the twelve-year-old identical twin of Alana.
