Remember that song Don't Mess Around With Jim? It sounds like you also Don't Mess Around With Howard. Very nice job. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Great characterization of Howard. While he seems mild-mannered like his mom, he can show his inner boxer. Great description of his encounter with your cousin. He certainly took Ricky by surprise. Howard showed that's kind of a neat way to be. Others didn't know about his boxing skills. It would not be wise to pick a fight with him. Great character study, and I enjoyed the bit about your cousin joining the army or the foreign legion after his encounter with Howard. judi

Dear Bill, I am sure that Howard left his mark somewhere inside your psyche just the same as Gene, and Charlie and all the rest. even that small town that you grew up in, molded you into a very different vessel. I think it was only God's gift of writing, That lifted you out of that island of misfit toys.

I like this story and Howard. He used his power sparingly, but then when needed, he exploded. He had a hidden weapon that he could use when threatened. Howard is an interesting character as are his parents. Your descriptions of their characteristics are well done.
I enjoyed the read.
Regards,
Mary

I know that guy. I was that guy. I was not trained, but I was relentless. I had so much energy and love fighting so much that I was the personification of the energizer bunny. Trust me, you would get tired of hitting me and my hitting you right back. It was like you could not hurt me, but I would eventually hurt you despite your size.

I find I like Howard. His appearance may have been unprepossessing, but his mettle was pure, forged steel.I love stories where someone is giving a "rubbishing" only to have it stuffed back down their neck when the object of their rudeness retaliates. Howard seems to have his own slant on Life and Living. I'd say that the reason you didn't hear a lot from him was because of the kind of example his father was. Mine was much the same and I was very quiet when he was around. A" coiled snake" within sums
Howard up very well indeed. Goodonya Howard Attaboy. cheers Cass

Bill,
I like this story a lot, about a quiet kid who has it up to "here" with a bully and "pugilizes." him as you say.
I like the way you've chosen your words for the story.
Excellent true tale,
Good luck in the contest,
Cindy

What an interesting character Howard was. And what a odd couple his parents were! I'm glad you got to see the hidden boxer in him. Sounds like this character should show up in one of your future military intelligence thriller works.
