Hello Liz :)
It's extortionate, isn't it?!
I have only 'paid' for base certificates for my last few postings as I just can't 'afford' the price of pumps and I can't afford the time to review as much as I need to, in order to win a few pumps!
I get the feeling you enjoy math(s) ;)
Best wishes as always, Debra

I think Katherine Kean (see her review) nailed it--people can't go out and spend money on account of Corona lockdowns so they buy pumps with real cash!

So nice that we fans support each other--thanks to all of you, I generally get 20+ reviews on a base 52 cent promotion and 10+ on a 2 center! Cheers. LIZ

You have just clarified my thinking. I began noticing yesterday that buying a pump wasn't moving me anywhere and that it was taking more pumps to get anywhere. Bless you, for analyzing what is going on. The price has been raised without the members being told. So why aren't the prizes rising? It's hardly worth winning when you have to pay so much to even get four days' publicity. Most often I promote more than once so double the price.

Liz,

Well, we've been lacking prose writers for a while now - maybe this means there are new kids on the block. IDK. It's frustrating for promoting, but might be good for the overall prose community. Thanks~!

You explained it well, Liz. I enjoyed reading your informative post. One aspect you did not mention was how much reviewing one has to do to maybe even get one bonus pump. Any I have go so fast it's unbelievable.
It's much the same on the poetry side, too.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Do you do the "bonus reviewing" (under UP FOR REVIEW)? You have a 50/50 chance to win a pump for prose; 25% chance for poetry. I I've accumulated dozens of pumps, not going to squander them with so much competition now.

While I know there is truth in your every word on this subject, Liz, I work my flabby butt off for each piece I write and find myself (against my better judgment) sitting on Saturday night's doorstep with my coin a-jingling and setting my sights on the burbs. It's not enough to get at or near the top, I want the reader to see those little words after the dollar amount of ... and maybe more! That would be another $2.95 if it weren't for the fact that I read a shitload of pieces (almost all of which have those words after them), so I'm likely to win a Lucky Leprechaun. Largely, I think it's an ego thing. I'm tremendously competitive and once I see my story near the top I'll keep adding pumps until I'm tapped out.

It's a good thing I'm not a drinker!

I've decided the market all depends on demand. The more people that want a top spot ,the more the markets escalates in price. I think you sometime get your better prices on Saturday when everyone is waiting for the a 6 star rating to be doled out again on Sunday to post. Shh... Don't noise it around.

Poor Tom must be down to his last billion, but then again, we'll have to do more reviewing time heh heh, that could be bad for the likes of the poor and needy like me, thanks for sharing Liz, blessings Roy

Liz,

I'm on my phone...not sure I can give a decent review from my little position...but this post is hysterical! So the prices have not only exploded at the grocery store, but on Fanstory as well?

Talk about inflation. I have one additional note...when up at the top...You can move only 1 cent as well. It gets really tight up there. The air is super thin. Also, something to keep in mind...if one wants to promote their work anywhere close to First Street, they had better do it as soon as possible. If you wait until the following day...whatever price offering you have finally landed...Will not be the top of that price give awsy. In other words...if one goes to 88 cents on the second day of your listing...because you may have a popular post...it will be the 3rd 88 cent post.

Your Cliff notes and math are so funny too. And then the estimated reviews vs actual.

Let's face it...our great fans keep us afloat and I thank you for your support and also for thanking your devoted fans.

Have a great weekend,

Anna

You are so witty and wry.

I too have been dismayed to find my posts knocked down several notches--a few times I was competing against myself.

True about fans. I don't often put mine up high...I did have a couple I found special...lol Most recently I was helping a newbie - could not believe $3 pump got her one cent higher and 2 under that one. Anyway, she's better off doing her thing, which is not promoting her work...Entering or starting blind contests and winning. Then she has money to start more contests and win more. I know what her entries are...but, for the most part I don't vote. Who's got time for that?
She won all on her own. End of story in a reply. lol

Good for Tom if people are paying real money.

I'll stay down on skid row hoping I don't get robbed of my funny money. Lol. Your notes made my head want to explode. I couldn't go there. Thanks for the helpful information, I mean I'm sure it's helpful to the rich and famous. Lol

I'm not good at math... I have noticed an inordinate amount of pumping has to occur before I see a promoted piece making any real progress. Thanks to your explanation, I now see why I was puzzled that even though I was pumping multiple times, my post was NOT moving up one iota after a certain point! I guess this is profitable for the site-- I do know a few who are perfectly willing to BUY the Member Dollars with their real cash money in order to rocket to the top-- For the great majority of us, however, it is a whole lot of reviewing...(often days and days worth!)--before I can post and hope to promote anywhere near the top ten. Previously it seemed an equal trade-- I DO enjoy reading an reviewing...and if I didn't promote I'd often garner five or six reviews (ergo, minimal feedback)-- Now, I wonder if this isn't going to backfire.
More and more will flock to that top twenty listing in order to amass enough "bucks" from reviewing--in order to spend said "bucks" to get a fair number of reviews themselves! If the price structure was going to change it sure would be helpful not to have to pay $9.95 up front...
Like in the real world (not nearly as fun to hang in as the virtual world of writing)--it's a squeeze financially (what with pandemic, et al)--to budget for food and rent. Seems like not the best time to raise the cost of promoting our work, especially when many of us are still sticking close to home out of an abundance of caution for the sake of our health. NOW the one true on line enjoyment I have is going to price me back out of the market... As it is I often don't post for a week or two, while I work to review enough to promote when I DO post! Hmmm. It's discouraging. Still--there are certain writers (you among them) I happily "fan" and look forward to reading regardless of promotion. I've told you before, I'd pay YOU to read your work! I have a wonderful following...but small. It's all a lot to ponder... MY knee jerk reaction is maybe I should post when I want to, even when I can't promote--and hope for the best. Just like real life huh? The wealthy rise to the top, the rest strive to survive...
