Yes, and to get that seal thing, that ALL TIME BEST seal, one must spend a fortune! And then, sometimes it doesn't work out...but then again, you never know when the Review Fairy might show up.

Hi Liz,
It doesn't pay to use pumps (unless you win them). It doesn't pay to chase down reviews. And it doesn't pay to concentrate on rankings. That stuff is all superfluous. Better to concentrate on the quality of writing, and the possibility of getting published someday. For me, I'm happy if a piece reaches "Recognized" status. That's good enough for me. Fifteen reviews, and hopefully some good advice along the way.
Hugs,
Kimbob

So true all you say. I never pay for pumps--and it's a waste to use them now that pricing is competitive.

I think Katherine Kean (see her review) nailed it--people can't go out and spend money on account of Corona lockdowns so they buy pumps with real cash, thus driving up the relative price of promotion to a given position.

So nice that we fans support each other--thanks to all of you, I generally get 20+ reviews on a base 52 cent promotion and 10+ on a 2 center! Cheers. LIZ

I've been grumbling (to myself) about that too. Thanks for speaking out!

When a piece really catches my interest, or if it's a writer that I know will be fun to read, I'll review even if it pays 2 cents. And this past week, I ignored quite a few high paying promotions because I'm not into horror and fantasy and sci-fi.

These days, though, I mostly ignore the slums because if I don't aim for the downtown high rises, I'll never earn enough to promote anything I post. And I've posted very little as a result.

Who has time to sit and review all day if you also want to write and post?

Thanks for your review and comments. Even in the short works category, I find that my posts are usually down on the third page or close to it. It takes a lot of member pumps to climb those heights, and like you I wouldn't even go there with a poem. I save member pumps until I've accumulated 10 or more, but I usually have to shell out member dollar even then. It's an expensive proposition. I suppose it would behoove a person who has a promising post to find the time of day when there are the least writers vying for attention and then promote. Certainly worth studying. Maybe early morning would be a good time. judi

Time of day you post wouldn't matter because the promotions run 4 days and you'd continually be bumped down by the competition.

I confess! Sometimes I use actual money to promote. I should listen when the site advises me " You can't afford this." judi

When I first joined Fan Story, I promised myself I would NEVER get out my debit card unless it was to pay membership fees. I have stuck to that promise. Your writing is excellent, using very specific details to convey your message about the exorbitant amount of money we COULD spend on here (and some members DO). The situation really could be compared to gambling--couldn't it?!

Since most of my regular readers from when I was here more often have either passed on or left the site. I don't read as many different writer's posts as before, just the few like you who make me smile and are willing to spend valuable time correcting my boo boos, for free. Therefore, there aren't as many reciprocal reads and reviews to bolster my totals as I remember. What I'm saying is: the key to collecting reviews is reading a host of posters, not spending too many promotion bucks. At least that was my experience in the past. Thanks for sharing.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I had worked out this Maths long before. One has to review hard to earn that many pumps which explains why many reviews are shoddy because they are reviewing for the sake of earning pumps. The higher you promote ,the more the number of reviews and higher your rank....
But in a computerised system , can there cannot be a better method...?
I can't afford to buy pumps .so I have to slog ....LoL.

Not only that, but if you do manage to pump up to 1.10, and you are above others, the next time you look you will be below them. They will have added more to their work to go above. I have now given up on this as it's ridiculous. And it still didn't give them any more reviews. The other thing that is annoying, is the number of old posts brought back for the tenth time to sit at the top of the front page and offering three times what it was when I reviewed it when it first came out five years ago. The reason I like to give a fair amount is that I like to pay my reviewers for pointing out my errors. And they are worth every cent I can give them. But I can't afford to pay real money out to buy them. Well done for bringing this up, Liz. :)) Sandra xx

I appreciate the time and effort you have put in to write this valuable piece. Eye-opener indeed.! Scary! I am out of this rat race and would like to post just for the heck of it. I'm just not cut out for it. I am indeed very happy that some read my posts/stories/poetry and like them. You are an exceptional one to take pains to correct the innumerable mistakes I commit. It's ages since I saw a pump. But then, I am not worried. I just like to share my stories. Cheers!

I can certainly relate to this one... It's costing me a fortune and a half to place my stories. I review and review, but a lot of them are one point and 2 cents so we don't get far with that. It's really getting difficult as you so boldly reminded all of us. LOL Smiles - Carol
