Patricia,

I'm sorry I had missed this impacting post. Now blessed to have found it.
Your short personal testimony about your experience with depression and how you felt outcast and perhaps judged by the church is very well written.

Thank you so much for sharing the lyrics to the song; "Wounded Soldier"

Your passion is clear in your strong ending. I'd like to look at it again:

"A few years later I determined to try to educate people in the church about mental illness of the fact that Christians can be afflicted with this ailment, just as they can be afflicted with many other diseases.

It in my estimation, it's high time for the church to put aside the stigma about mental illness and be willing to come alongside those who have these illnesses."

I agree and thank you for your efforts in this important matter.

Bravo! Spot-on. Eloquent and heartfelt plea--I assumed attitudes had changed in 40 years' time--given this is current, I take it you are still fighting to destigmatize mental illness. Excellent piece!

Amen! Thank you so much for sharing your story, Patricia. The Lord's people NEED to acknowledge that believers can suffer from mental illness. We are all susceptible in our frail human bodies and it keeps us dependent on the Lord!

Mental wounding doesn't always show in an outward way to others, and it is hard for people to relate to how difficult every day life can be for someone battling the darkest emotions due to a brain's chemical imbalance. I think you have done a great service with this informative and personal posting, Patricia. I hope your mission is going well! Forever blessings, Janet

I'm amazed that anybody would think mental illness only affects a particular group and not Christians. Thank you for sharing your story Patricia, and the wounded soldier song. I hope you are doing well,
cheers,
valda

I am a wounded soldier too. Never let anyone judge you just because they can't see your wound. I am a wheelchair person (big accident, lost a leg) many so-called friends walked away. God on the other hand has used me to send His message of love across the ether. Just because we can't walk or have problems seeing like able-bods, we are still whole in the Lord. And I say to those who judge, "walk a mile in our shoes." You have done wonders with your writing. Love, Kay XX

Excellent point. There shouldn't be shame attached to mental illness. I remember some years ago a candidate for vice president had to withdraw because it was learned that he had a history of mental illness. You are right that the church should be understanding of those who suffer from mental illness. It wasn't anything they did that brought it on. It's admirable of you to educate people with some mental disease. They need support, not censure. judi

I certainly agree with you about that. I have a dear friend who has suffered several breakdowns and during those times she can't think rationally. I can't imagine what it must be like to have people assume it somehow her fault.

I agree with you, Patricia. You did a good job expressing your thoughts and feelings. I did not know the Church acted this way. Yes, attitudes need to change.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Thank you for your review. The whole church is not guilty of this, just a few very uninformed ones.

It's funny on the one hand church it's open for the poor and sick, but mental illness didn't make the list? Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.
