This is a wonderfully done tanaka about what Jesus's death, resurrection and ascension did for us. It gives a strong image of the setting of the crucifixion.

I like the contrast of darkness and light like you said: "Darkness covers the face of the earth... and ... a pathway of light is offered..."

I liked your Tanka. At three in the afternoon, God covered the face of the earth when Jesus gave up the ghost. Jesus died that we may have life and have it more abundantly (Bible) now the darkness covers the earth once more in the form of 666.

This is a fine offering for Good Friday. In my opinion if you changed it all to present tense, it would be even more powerful and offer that hope appropriate for the day. It wouldn't change the syllable count at all. Just a suggestion as the work is just fine as is.
