Hello Liz.

After reading your story, I was saddened to hear about the situation Chuck found himself in. I have known people that struggled with OCD and it is a terrible thing to deal with. Some people have had their lives turned upside down because of it.

This is really well-written and exposes a real problem with many people. People that don't experience the feelings can't possibly understand.

Robert

    Many thanks for the bonussssss!

He probably wouldn't have gotten a dui==he'd had one drink--but he imagined the worst-case scenario. Now he's obsessing about the consequences as regards an incident report--I don't know whether he has OCD per se, but he certainly has chronic anxiety and hypochondia!

A great of example of how we always fear the worst. Although the boy was all right, Chuck was haunted by the incident and visualized all kinds of scenarios in which he would serve time in prison. The incident may haunt him for quite a while. We're inclined to think in terms of "what if's." Interesting point to consider. judi

I think people do that a lot. They let their imaginations take over and then find out their fears were exaggerated. judi

Whoa. Man, you are going to bring out the "perfect" people with this one. I'll start.
One thing this drunk can pride myself on is I've never driven with enough alcohol in my body to get a dui. In all of the years drinking. The sad thing is, most people do not believe me because it's all too common. "Not even once, really?!" Yes really. Hopefully Chuck learned his lesson.

Liz,

Well, good. Maybe he won't be drinking and driving anymore. You'd think, by that ripe old age he might have learned that drinking while driving was rather naughty. Thanks!

OMG, I swallowed the bait completely and that included the hook, and you hauled me all the way to the end, flopping on the shore. Wasn't Chuck the name of that guy you were dating a few months earlier--the TRUMPeter? Oh my God!

We're still "together" separately -- 12 years in May. He ceased Trumpeteering when he saw the video of the insurrection.

I guess this is another one based on truth. Apparently, it was a close call which might have been much worse. He must of hit very lightly if the guy picked himself up and road away without taking down information to sue. Chuck is going to cause his own demise from stressing for so long.

He probably wouldn't have gotten a dui==he'd had one drink--but he imagined the worst-case scenario. Now he's obsessing about the consequences as regards an incident report--there is more to the story--the kid's friend confronted Chuck and threatened to report him--the father filed a report though it appears to be inoccuous.

I don't know whether he has OCD per se, but he certainly has chronic anxiety and hypochondia!

I'm never sure when you are writing fiction or actual event. It seems that the moral of the story is don't let Chuck drink and drive home at midnight. It is amazing how we can imagine how events will unfold when they have no basis in reality, yet those haunting thoughts will stick with us, like particularly bad dreams.

You're out to give me a heart attack! I know of your Chuck and I was thinking surely, this is FICTION and it's for a contest! But it seems he did hit someone. What a nightmare! I'm sure he doesn't feel like driving ever. Our nephew was hit at night in the rain wearing dark clothing. A decade later, he found himself working with the wife of the man whose truck hit him. They became good friends.

So scary. I can imagine Chuck must be so rattled. I'm sure you'll help him keep calm. Goodnight! 💖
