Gut-wrenching. From the first sentence, I knew what was going on. A mother's worst nightmare.

It was interesting to have it from the volunteer's point of view. I think that was a good choice.

All the best.

thank you! Even though it's been forty years, I felt that the young man's life must have been scarred in so many ways and he deserved to be honored. I thank you for your kindness and thoughtful review. Smiles to you!

Begin Again,

Poignant story! Heartbreaking scene that you wrote well with respect and honor to the boy who drowned and his suffering mother.

Well done!

Patricia

It was 40 years ago. The coroner did not list him as drowning since he had no water in his lungs. He was listed as asphyxiation. It often feels like yesterday, and for some reason, I felt the need to honor the young man who found my son. Thank you, Patricia. I appreciate the kindness. Smiles - Carol

Carol, I didn't realize this was your son in the story. So tragic. I loved the picture of the boy in the picture, but I didn't realize it was the boy who drowned. Such a cute boy.

Thanks for sharing your difficult story.

Thanks, Patricia - He did a lot of living in four years and then announced to his dad that he was going to go see Peter Pan, Mickey Mouse and Jesus. Thirty minutes later, he was gone. One of God's angels.

That's beautiful. Although tragic for you, he knew it was time. It wasn't an accident. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, I believe with all my heart he was trying to tell us he needed to go but it would be alright.

This is a very powerful piece of writing, very well written and very moving, describing such a scene of horror with grief that lasts a lifetime. The few words make the recording of the event even more striking. Well done. Good wishes for the contest.

Thanks Wendy - I pray that the young man was able to move past that day, but I imagine it left it's scars. He was and is a hero deserving to be honored. Thanks for the review. Smiles to you - Carol

These occasions are tragic and this sent a shiver down my spine as I remember my daughter stepping off the curb, when she was 10 years old, right in front of a car and landed on the bonnet without a single mark on her. We were trying to cross a busy road filled with slow moving cars. The driver me and my daughter hugged for ages in the street, we were all thankful that she was unharmed. These tragedies bond humans together, love Dolly x

Dolly - How awesome and you were so close, but unable to stop what was happening. I am so very thankful that she was unhurt. Hugging with the driver shows how these moments draw us together forever. Smiles and blessings to you - Carol

Good morning, Bob - I appreciate your kindness and the thoughts are six stars to me. This young man's life was scarred for life and I pray he was able to move past it. He was and will always be a hero who deserves to be honored. He stepped up and offered his help without being asked and it was a difficult task. Smiles to you!

Thanks Barb! I felt the young man should have been honored considering the emotional scars he probably carries. It's 40 years this July and I often feel like it was yesterday.

This is a powerful story. The life jacket in the sand is an ominous image of what is to come. I can not imagine the pain that goes with this story. God bless and good luck.

Thank you! The young man is the hero - He did not get up that morning and know that his life would be altered so much. Finding my son must have left scars. Smiles to you!

Carol this is a nightmare of everyone and especially the mother, who I think was you. What a horrible thing to have happen. Accidents happen so quickly, and they can happen to any one. It is wonder any of our children live to grow up.

He told his dad he wasn't going home. He said he was going to see Peter Pan, Mickey Mouse and Jesus. (Make of it what you will) Either way the young man in the water was a hero! His life changed forever too. You are so kind, Beth. Thank you for the shiny stars in his honor. Smiles!

Such a sad story, and one can only try to imagine the effect that day and that discovery had on the poor volunteer. So many selfless people in the world are never given the recognition they deserve, thank you for sharing this.

It's been 40 years but I think of the young man often. Walking in those 18 inches of water, praying he isn't the one, but he was. He is a hero! Thanks for the kind review. Smiles to you.

This is such a sad story that my eyes were red. You did an amazing job to fit the story within 80 words.

This is a good story for the contest. I wish you good luck.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

It's been 40 years but yesterday it felt as if it had just happened. For some reason, I needed to honor the young man whose life was changed forever on that day. I never got to thank him. Smiles to you!
