This was a great trip down memory lane. I remember picking up soda bottles, dropped on the street, on my way to the store. They were worth two cents each, so three bottles could get you a Milky Way and a Fireball. It is amazing that now the copper is worth more than the coin. If they don't do away with coins altogether, we may end up with plastic ones.

Oh, you bring back the memories with this poem. I love it! I remember all of those things as if they were yesterday. Remember gathering every pop bottle on our block to return to the store for pennies? Twenty pennies got us into the movie theater where you bought your box of popcorn for a dime. You bought your ticket and popcorn from the same window, Thanks for sharing.

A very clever combining memories and nostalgia, with sayings and wisdom about pennies. All done in a creative way, and supported by an interesting photo. Well done.

A very good poem about pennies, and how we used to value them. Here we do not have them any more. I kept a few just to have for a souvenir. At the stores, our purchases are rounded up to the nearest nickel.

Anne it will not be too many years forward that change and folding money will be just another novelty, sadly so!

This is terrific and brings back memories of Penny candy I bought from a corner store in my neighborhood. It had a coin operated horse outside that you could ride. I still collect pennies and have many wheat pennies that I cherish. Thanks for sharing. :)

Free verse of the days of innocence-- Pre internet, Pre Smart Phone--
When we skipped to the candy store, five shiny pennies in our little fists and delighted in the myriad of choices! When we'd gladly sweep Grandma's kitchen floor for little copper treasures! Nowadays kiddos ask for gift card to order more "stuff" for their online games. I guess it's progress... Still, as shiny penny's worth of love was a treasure!--Karenina

Save it for a rainy day

Great entry for the Pennies event in The Fabulous Free Versers Club. You brought up some memories of public telephones. It seems ages ago. Your poem flows well. The structure makes sense. It draws on emotions. it presents strong images.

I really enjoyed reading this poem. The imagery that you brought to life within my mind was so incredibly vivid that I felt like I was truly traveling on a journey with you. Thank you for sharing this!

I particularly enjoyed experiencing this -
"Long before a recorded
ring-ring-ring on a cellular
device, it was cling, clang,
clung as coins were dropped
into the slots on every pay phone
found on every corner in any town.
You would dig through pennies to
select your quarter, nickel and dimes."

Happy writing!

Your poem is excellent--vividly descriptive in covering the "life" of the penny. Pay phones are still needed--forgot me cell phone, phone battery's dead, car trouble--but you won't find one!. Oh, I remember penny loafers,
once a fshion statement! (Do you need the s on Americans?)

What a lovely array of memories. I remember our grandad sent us 10 shillings for our birthday each year. It was a ten-bob-note. In Australia Today that is a dollar coin which can buy hardly anything. For 20 cents we could gain entry to the outdoor pool for the whole day with enough change for a pie and a coke for lunch and a redskin lolly at the end of the day.

Possummajic, is not amazing how far we could stretch things in those bygone days and make such happiness come alive.

    Yes I agree.
