This is a creatively written biographical story with a great and logical moral in the end. Thanks for the author notes at the end which helped me appreciate the story even more. As a retired young child school teacher, I personally preferred to use tact. I wanted to say, "Your son disrupts the class and never listens." I instead said, "Your son is an independent thinker...signs of a future leader." The parents were happy. With your story, I especially liked the last line. "Candor 1, Tact 0.

Great story. To have both tact and candor is tough and your sergeant had neither. He may not have appreciated your candor, but I sure do. It makes for a great tale. Good luck in the contest.

That was brilliant! LOL. I enjoyed the build-up in this story, O'Grady is a master crawler. To have got where he did, doing nothing, and the how he had no idea what the jobs were, was hilarious. But your touch of honesty was the best of all. Well done, this is a wonderful contest entry. Good luck! :)) Sandra xx

Wickedly clever--hilarious twist--you do a masterful job setting the scene and depicting this blowhard suck-up--the punchline is priceless! Gotta remember it--may come in handy!

This is a great story for the non-fiction writing contest. I like how you built it up to the final bit where candor won out over tact. That much have really shocked him. You evidently didn't let him intimidate you. This was very humorous

I absolutely loved this one Earl. As a former E-5 in the Marines for eight years I can appreciate that whole deal except I don't know how many guys would have the gonads to say that to the Top. LOL Good job and it should easily be Story of the month next time around.

Bravo! Your friend, Bob

Here in Israel, they call them kit-bag questions. Right before an 80-kilometer trek, some fool soldier will ask, "Do we need to bring our kit-bag?" Three guesses as to the answer, and the first 2 don't count.
This story is truly funny. How many other jobs have you managed to get out of by using candor? LOL

Just a couple of typos:
- '... as a ROTC instructor...' - an ROTC
- 'Bear in my mind...' - what's the 'my' for?
- a few commas missing

Thanks for the quick lesson in army protocol and how to bullshit your way through the system! Really enjoyed the fact that you didn't settle for tact.

I found out after the Army that candor isn't a very prized trait. Thank you very much. I appreciate you reading and reviewing my story.

I can see and hear the other members laughing when you responded to his question. Sounded like a good answer to me, but not to one who sees only black and white--your answer was gray. I enjoyed your story and even more so that it was true. Best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

Really well-written and and well set up to be very amusing. I wonder if he ever even understood why you said that to him. If this is in a contest, it has a really good chance of winning.

Well, Earl, you described some of the officers that gave me orders, :) Most of the time they would give us the shit details while the other men just lounged around doing nothing. One time while working on a plane that needed to go out on a mission they put my team to litter detail. I got pissed and jumped on the lieutenant's face, a green baby out of diapers. Needless to say we cleaned the base. :) This is a good offering for the Non-fiction Writing Contest. Thank you for sharing.
