You're a brave man, Earl! How did you get away with saying exactly what you thought - oh, you did end up with a new assignment. Did that mean you didn't have to deal with O'Grady after that? Love your army stories! Hope you do well in the contest!

Yeah O'Grady thought it was punishing me not to be in his platoon any more. Thank you very much. I appreciate you reading and reviewing my story.

This piece had me laughing so hard I was choking on my tongue. I've never been know for my tact or candor, so I've spend most of my life passing for my trespasses or wishing I'd kept my damn mouth shut. LOL. Wish I had a six. Thanks for sharing.

Your sergeant ranking is different in the American army, here, similar to British, they are sergeant, staff sergeant, WO 2, WO1, Regimental sergeant-major, (RSM) senior rank, closest to the CO. Beautifully written Earl, well said, blessings Roy

Sometimes, candor is the best, but we must choose our moments. It seems to serve you well, though. I look forward to more of your stories. Hopefully, soon!

Earl,

You crazy dude! When you know this guy is over your head and can bust you down to your socks. You silly, silly goof. But, on the other hand - if the guy didn't want to know the honest answer, he really shouldn't have asked an honest guy, right?

I have to remind folks of that all the time. I try to be an honest (but reasonably kind) individual. Don't ask me a question unless you're sure you're good with whatever the answer might be. *smile*

Thanks, dear. Fun stuff!

Dear Earl, sometime I wish the authors notes could be posted above the story, because I spent a bunch of time trying to figure out what a Police Call was, and what in the heck marines were doing with such things. (so much for candor) I will just have to remember next time you post a story to go to the bottom first.

The only other thing I need to know is who's rank was higher? Yours or OGrady,s? Because I don't know if being reassigned as an anti-armor team leader, was a reward or punishment. (you will have to remember that a reader, without a military background, will lose half of the humor or pathos of your story)

O'Grady was higher. He looked at me being reassigned as a punishment while I looked at it as reward because I got out from under him. I was in the Army, not the Marines. Thank you for taking the time to read and review my story.

Good luck in the Non-Fiction Writing Contest, Earl. I do so enjoy your truthful tales about your services as they are interesting and educational. I probably would have been given the lowest of low duties such as digging latrines or cleaning toilets because I would constantly be mouthing off, lol. You did a great job. Blessings.

This Non-Fiction or Essay speaks your personal experiences expressively, to the point and concisely as you have gained and felt doing the action for and in the army depot or cantonment and at army headquarters, for you never forced anyone to answer to the question; well said, well done; thanks for sharing this. This is a great story, and your closing line says it all. I've heard many stories about the Sgt. Ogradys of the military world. He probably thinks he won. You are missing one line space in your dialog near the end. It caused me a hitch in reading. You might want to fix that. Nice job.

I was an Army Officer and my take on this is that one had to always be truthful (candor) and always had to be respectful (tactful). Just saying, perhaps a bit of perspective. At the end of the day the winning score was always equal to Truth = 1 and Respect = 1.

This rating does not count towards story rating or author rank.
The highest and the lowest rating are not included in calculations.

Let me put this into perspective: At zero dark thirty this guy was talking about taking guys straight from 6 hours of guard duty and making them police the roads of Schofield Barracks until 1600 then going back on guard duty because he didn't want to tell the first sergeant we didn't have enough bodies to do both details. I guess you had to be there. Thanks for reading and reviewing.
