what a great idea about the free homework passes. Teaching is not always easy so to come up with an idea that the entire school would participate in, is quite the challenge.

What a fun chapter - though I do not like the ominous growling when they are out and near Katherine's house. Yuck. I'm anxious to find out what's causing that and GET RID OF IT. I trust Gabe will handle that -- and sooner, rather than later... yuck!
Notes, if I may:
1.) "Heavens no! We have a facility meeting in a little while.
--> 'facility' or 'faculty' ?
2.) High football is a national pass-time in Texas.
--> I like the play on the word 'pass' like in football - fun! But I think you mean 'pastime'. You're cute - even when you may not mean to be!

Nice suspense in this chapter. The dog's are on alert and now Gabriel is up to something too.
The math board is a nice touch because it shows a different side to Katherine - her dedication and creativity as a teacher.
Check out Redford Mom's profile if you haven't already. She is writing a memoir about teaching and used football to teach kids math.
But that's just for your interest. You've already created a realistic character and your story is moving along just fine.

I like the way you keep the mystery going in the background and keep building the tension while also keeping the everyday activities moving along. Katherine is really fitting in at school.
Someone else probably already pointed this out, but just in case--I think you meant "or" in this sentence:
