"moving backward from Cezanne into Turner." What a unique and brilliant way to describe speed!
And with it you have excellently put the finishing touches on your canvas, using a painter's palette to take the reader along with you on your rapid journey from the muted impressionistic tones of the day's end, through the brief and fiery tones of sunset, into the sombre, romantic hues of night.
Absolutely superb! Well done Chris! -Blu

Thanks Blu. I think it takes an art lover to fully appreciate this. You clearly know your art and artists!

I love these lines, it's like a suspended moment in time where everything levels up to start a new mystery, the night will be born when the sun sets down:"
And, before it abandons us completely,
the escaping sun
rims the highest ridge in fire.' Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

This poem has a very modern feel to it. I liked the way the lines were short and punchy and the dramatic effect this had on the poem. Thank you for sharing and stay safe.

Rooftops of Shiochi is a verbal portrait of a city which has colourful rooftops which spread under a blue canvas of sky and the sunset coloured mountains. Reference to the landscape artists is not very clear.except that travelling back in time...

Thank you Sanku! Cezzanne painted colors as a series of shapes blending together until the overall forms almost dissappear; Turner?s suns always light something in fire and heone of his most famous is of a train, called Rain, Steam and Speed.

Thank you very much for clearing that.I am not very familiar with Cezanne(except that he was a landscape artist.) but I have read that Turner used to paint marine scenes with rough seas ans violent winds.

Very nice imagery of the winding down of a day. I admit, I was familiar with Cezanne, but had to do a search for Turner. Aaaaah. Now I get it. Very nice imagery indeed.

I?m glad you enjoyed it. Turner is my favorite artist. Started off as an architect; then romantic, then impressionist and ended almost as an abstract expressionist using only color and light. Like Bob Dylan he just kept pushing the boundaries. Thanks for kind the review!

I thought of Cezanne's impressionism, then saw some of Turner's works and thought "fuzzy impressionism."

The Rooftops of Shimiochi
by Chris Chambless
Hello, Chris,
Lovely imagery. I especially like....
canvas
of failing light....
rooftops of Shimiochi
dissolve into a river of color.
Chugoku mountains,
turned blue by a cloak of clouds,
I wish I could visit Japan.
Wonderful poem.

Thank you for the encouraging words Gypsy Blue Rose! I lived in Osaka for two years and was able to travel through a significant portion of the country. Still have a list of places I want to visit or see again. Hopefully after they lift the Covid restrictions I?ll be able to do it. It?s really a wonderful place. Hope you get to visit!

Yes I see how the speed of the train blends the colours, merging them into a blur of fluid colour like an impressionist painting. Love the way the setting sun is portrayed, using the names of painters to guide our understanding. A very well-written poem, full of beautiful imagery.
