That is quite a story and I'm sure at your young age you were quite impressed with Muthu. It certainly would seem logical that Muthu was
bitten by the snake's mate. My son is a Herpetologist, which means the study of reptiles and amphibians, so I am quite familiar with all kinds of
snakes. That certainly was no garter snake.

This story is very well written (grammar, punctuation, flow, etc.), making it easy to read and enjoy. I loved the imagery throughout with descriptions of village life and myths. You took us on a brief journey to India for a terrifying evening with a cobra. Very well done. Best wishes in the contest.

I enjoyed your story because it was very observational with lots of detail about village life and activities, about the people and relationships, and especially about the cobra's behaviour.
Are rattlesnakes ever harmless? Your father's comment seems odd, after Muthu, the snake expert, said it was a vile one.
Your childish hero-worship comment is funny, then we get a tragic touch when we learn that Muthu died. Possibly the 'myth' is true.

Yes ,rattlesnakes are nonpoisonous and are the common type seen in those villages.sometimes the stripes on the body are similar and in the dusk my father made a mistake.

I was wondering why you would call the cobra a rattlesnake. Not that it matters. But of course living in Australia I know cricket, and know that everybody plays it there. This was a most readable piece, and thoroughly enjoyed by myself, well done, great job Sanku, blessings Roy

I didnt call cobra a rattlesnake .Rattlesnakes are non poisonous and were common seen in those times since the strpes are a bit similar unless it shows the hood in the dusk one can be mistaken.

Hi Santha. Right off please change the heading on this post. It is non-fiction, right? Confusion see the header now that says: "General Fiction posted February 27, 2021 and make it Non-fiction instead. (quickly LOL)

Now for the post itself: Wow! what an ending. LOL. Please allow me to compliment you, not only on the writing of this piece but also the fantastic imagery you have used throughout, like this for instance:

" He came wiping his hands in the ubiquitous cotton towel which was present almost always on one of his shoulders, usually the left. He went down the steps and stood silently watching the dark form slowly slithering forward."

Thank you ,Bob .I am still scared of snakes though our religion gives them a holy place. Here people are scared that they get 'curse' if you dont worship them .Even in the cities where they are never seen.

Wow. Thanks for sharing this interesting story. What a mental picture it gives of both your environment and the snake. Very telling from a child's perspective. Very well written. Leaves one to wonder if the myth was true.

Black mom as and cobras are deadly!it is sad you hero had to die of a snake bite. The forest rangers out there have a dangerous job.I stay as far away as I can. They say if you kill a snake and hang it on your fence itwill rain for nine days straight go figure.

I enjoyed the details of this story, especially the description of the snake's raising and lowering of its hood as the bat is lifted and brought down. I also like the surprise ending, and the child's falling in love with the heroic cook. Best wishes in the contest.

That was quite a spooky ending, Sanku! This is a six star story, and I'm sorry I'm out of them. I hate snakes, and would keep my eyes open for them when we lived in Spain. I had a smile on my face when you said you were going to marry him when you grew up. I enjoyed this story, well done and good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx
