We all need to take this on board.

The article took me back to my class of ten year old children that I taught in 1981. This was the passage I set them to change the punctuation in order to create a more reasonable story.

'The king walked into the palace on his head, a crown on his feet. Boots the dog followed.'

Admittedly, this involve a period as well, but it was a fun exercise and, being the age they were I got them to illustrate both versions.

Yup, I got your point. A comma can make a big difference in leading or misleading the reader in the right direction/wrong direction. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

I agree about whoever said punctuation isn't important. As you showed, it can completely alter a sentence into a totally different meaning. I don't like the way the comma is omitted after the next to last item in a list. I've always been told to use a comma when a pause is needed. Thanks for all the information.

I love exercises like that. There is a site where they are you to put commas in different places for the same sentence. It's hilarious. I love the one about poor grandad, lol. These are fun pieces, Gareth, and essential learning. :)) Sandra xxx

Fine post with very good examples of how varied a simple comma can change a sentence. I have used many of these examples, but unfortunately, most times were by accident. Thanks for sharing.

Hurrah, Gareth! Your choices of examples of comma misuse gives the reader good reason to place his/her own writing under closer scrutiny. This, additionally, is so entertaining, it's a shame you didn't wait until the first of next week when your appreciative reader can better reward your efforts.

Good Morning, G!
What a delightful offering, and it is one that contains such important information for writers!
I taught English classes for nearly 40 years at the high school and collegiate levels. When I began teaching in 1976, grammar and sentence punctuation were still staples of English instruction. Then someone had the inane idea that if students simply read, they would learn the mechanics of the English languge through osmosis! What a farce! And the truly sad result is that most of my younger teaching colleagues followed that train of thought as well. In America today, grammar and the mechanical aspects of writing are seldom, if ever, directly taught.
Thank you for sharing!

Another good essay on the importance of the mechanics of language when writing. Great examples to go with the instruction, and you had a wonderful sense of humor that lightens the mood; loved the last line. estory

This is another good information piece. I am forever putting commas in the wrong place so, found this very informative. Although, the dog thing, I read it as she loved eating her dog in the first sentence lol. I had to read that one a couple of times before I got it. Thank you for sharing and stay safe.
