Happy Birthday young man! I don't know why I hadn't seen this post before, but I've seen it now and think it is excellent. I would like you to correct one word only... " loved teaching, loved children and was talented enough..." I think you meant "were talented," instead of was, because you are talking about teachers, plural. Anyway, I didn't see anything else I could complain about so I'm still giving this a six. After all, it IS your birthday. Are you retired yet? Birthday hugs. MM

This is a very good article extolling the benefits of reading and early learning: I like these lines: "If you were fortunate to have been the student of some wonderful teachers who loved their vocation, loved teaching, loved children and was talented enough to open your eyes to the world, then you are indeed among the 'fortunate few." I can agree with that.

Thank you Anne, I still remember those wonderful teachers who took the extra effort to impress the world upon us.

It is extremely rewarding to read a text of absolute truths. Our instructors of the past opened our minds to great writers that you have mentioned. Above all, the teachers instilling us with their love and knowledge to help further our own ambition. Good work.

Thank you for reading, the stars, and your comments! So much knowledge would be lost if it wasn't written down and passed to the next generation.

The tone of this pice is set right from the opening sentence:
Reading is the greatest self-educator that exists.
Stirring stuff. The other words that I particularly liked are:
What is most important, and what we carry with us, whether we acknowledge it or not, is the very early teaching we received
The discussion of this is particularly fine. The part I liked less was the space given over to a long list of writers' names. I found that tedious.

I agree with you that reading opens the doors of our mind. I am thankful for the early teachers that instilled me a love of books. I'm glad I grew before television made us too lazy to read. This is good advice that you're giving. I hope there are young people out there who are willing to listen.

Thank you for reading, the stars, and you are right on about the boob tube!
I am reminded of the man who saw his granddaughter spend ten minutes on her homework and an hour on video games. He told her, "When Abe Lincoln was your age, he was learning from books he read by candle light!"
She replied, "Yeah, but when he was your age, he was president!"
    Go figure.

I think it's a great little comment on how important literature has been in our collective culture and how important it has been in the sharing of information that has built our society and our civilization. Where would we be without this fundamental means of sharing information and experience? I loved your list of authors; I am watching the Ken Burns documentary on Ernest Hemmingway now and suggest everyone watch it. It is really interesting. I would say some of the important books and writers in my life have been Black Beauty, Moby Dick, The Brains Benton Mysteries, The Chronicles of Narnia, and then later on The Lord of the Rings, James Joyce, Thomas Mann, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Cheever and Hemmingway, Raymond Carver and Pasternak. estory

Some very interesting points made. My daughter was lucky enough to have just the type of teacher you have described and that made her the insightful person she is now.

Thank you for reading, and all the stars! What a great reward for parenting, to have your daughter gain knowledge and insight from her teachers. The present culture, subject matter(Racial Theory) and general outlook of teachers is not favorable to our next upcoming generation.

Thank you for your words of wisdom and encouragement. Even if we weren't blessed with a great beginning in K to Year 4, we can develop skills by perseverance, and learning from others, and we can certainly learn from reflection and self-evaluation.

Hi Wendy, thank you for reading, and all the stars! I can tell from your comments that you are a self--made person, and you are spot--on about reflection(Did I do that Right?) and self evaluation(Am I the Person I want to be?). Also believe that those first, impressionable years are the m,ost important.

I am an avid reader and always have been and, yes, this love was fostered by the teachers (and parents) I was lucky enough to have. To this day (which is many decades later), I still remember that my second-grade teacher wrote a play which she called "Book Magic," bringing together characters from several children's stories, and we were thrilled to perform this as our class show. My love of Greek mythology is a direct result of my junior high and high school teachers. All of this is my long way of saying I fully agree with you, and reading is probably my favorite activity.
