This sums a lot of this story up, does it not, Karenina?

"I felt myself sinking into Grandma quicksand."

Very warm and wonderful story, my friend. I know sixes don't matter that much to you, but just know I would give you one for this writing if I had one, my friend. Bob

Yes. I was WAY over my head! Had no idea what was churning in that six year old brain! I don't need a six, but I'm always flattered when you mention you would have considered this piece for that recognition!--Thanks, Karenina

From the mouths of babes! Their minds take in adult conversations and classify it in a totally different way. The last year, my great-grandchildren have been living with me and I too have found how their translation can be so different. A marvelous story and thanks for sharing!

GREAT grandchildren living with you?! During Covid? Wish I had a medal of honor and courage to bestow to YOU! It's great to have them with you...BUT, it IS hard work and even harder to guess if what you said is what they "heard!"--Thanks, Karenina

Yes it will be a year on March 16th. I've homeschooled and been the second mama to 3 girls (6-9-and 12).
At 72, it can get very very tiring, but we do what must be done. Smiles to you!

I miss my grandkids terribly... BUT, I lack patience in this home schooling thing--just listening to their challenges makes my hair stand on end! I admire you for supporting them in this way... Very special!--Karenina

That was a cool insight. Maybe, the insight needs to be expanded? I see you forgot to post it into the competition, kudos to you though, as the story is still recognised and that's something to be proud of.

Thanks for the six stars! IN the personal experience, the insight was expanded by her very loving and attentive parents who had (of course) no idea she'd taken their conversation to mean she'd be "shuffled off to Buffalo" if another child came along! Besides, she got a puppy! (smile)-- Always a sure fire way to a young child's heart! Yup, blew it--posted it in my portfolio-not the contest. All's cool though...now I can "pretend" I had a chance! Thanks Daniel, Karenina

How funny! Kids are the best comedians, their innocence is magical and you brought a wise and faithful story here, my daughter yearned for another child and eventually got her wish, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

I agree! They hear with their heart. WE may be multilayered in our meaning but they pare away all of that and imagine something else entirely! Thanks--Karenina

I will genuinely say that it is a pity you missed the "From the mouth of a child " contest because I do think it could have been a placegetter. It is very well-written. And ... it just shows how easily miscommunication can occur, and not only with children. Very well done. (Sincerely.)

    Ah, SINCERELY! (wink and smile)---

I KNOW I said I'd welcome commiseration insincere comments about how I might have done...
    BUT

"Sincerely" is oh so much better!

Nothing I could ever write in fiction would to some of the gems I've accrued from the mouths of my children when they were young...and now my four grandchildren.

    Thanks!--Karenina

I really loved reading this true story. Emy sounds delightful.
Quite scary to think how a child can interperate a situation like that. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the competition. Jen.

Missed the competition due to the fact I'm a dork and posted it in my own portfolio rather than ON the competition site. Now I can DREAM it was winner without the stress of facing the likely truth!--Thanks, Karenina

Hey I was an only child and I've survived. It's not such a bad place, you get all the presents at Christmas time, and all your folk's attention. And you don't have any kid sister swiping your eyeliner. Cheer up you could be one of ten, or twelve, Yuck!

Yup! AT six Emilyn wanted a gaggle of siblings. At 12 she sees her three cousins squabbling and competing for attention and she's smart enough to know she has it made! (In the long run, she finessed a puppy out of her six year old angst and "Haylie" is still her best dog friend and she is Haylie's number one "person!"--Many Thanks, Karenina

Been there, done that--posted thinking I was entering the contest--NO! I enjoyed your well-written story, Karenina. Emy is a super smart young lady now, wow! Even a age 6, she had 'figured out' there was a 'problem' and had a solution of sorts. Your lines flow smoothly with great imagery. Yes, I believe this would been among the top prize-winning entries.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Okay Jan, I feel better now. If YOU made the same mistake then I'm not a totally lost writer...just a bit forgetful maybe? Anyway, once over the "mini-rant" I was just happy I'd applied myself to recounting this true story and practicing my prose writing... A bonus is I called Emy and read it to her and SHE declared me the WINNER! (Smile....) Thanks!--Karenina

Charming story--puts me in mind of how I when I was 4 I was terrified that the stone lions standing guard over a neighbor's porch would come to life and devour me in 20 years time--because a 5 year-old told me so! Per your note--yes, it is a shame!

AND when I was eight I was smitten with the three brothers who lived right next door... No kidding, their names were Tom, Dick and Harry. Harry was my special crush and one day during outside play (remember when kids used to climb trees and not virtually?)--Harry ran in his house and came out with a glass of ice cold mil on a hot summer's day. He offered me a sip and I couldn't resit. THEN I went RUNNING home to confess to my mother that "OH MY GOD! I MIGHT BE PREGNANT!" (Hey, how'd I know how that stuff worked?)---My mother about fainted!--Thanks for the review!--Karenina

Hello K.

This is a great narrative with your granddaughter. The response from her about being not being able to afford living on her own made me smile. That is an awareness that is unusual for a six year old.

When a child has mad up their mind about something., it is often uphill to undo the process.

Robert

Yes, yes you said it well. I knew right away I hadn't earned enough grandma stripes to handle it and so passed it off to her parents...
Her mom (my daughter) drove down to join our sleep over and by morning they had parlayed Emy's anxiety and wish for a sibling tha wouldn't leave her homeless...into the acquisition of a new puppy, "Haylie"--who remains now, 12 year old Emy's best dog friend ever to this day!--Thanks, Karenina
