This is great, really well written, comes off the page with ease. I really enjoyed it. If anything it could be longer- I love all the details, and I'm sure you could do more on that front.

I'd like to hear about some of the movies you saw, how you felt about them, which ones stuck with you and why.

All in all, great stuff, I just want more.

Thank you for the review and kind comments. Perhaps in another story as I did not want to stray from the cartoons and the wonder of the theatre architecture.

Yeah, it makes sense that you'd put that in another story. Or maybe it's just something to add to this and make longer. Either would work.

What a wonderful reminiscence from your childhood. Your description of the messes made and the sound of laughter are great. You probably got caught throwing the popcorn box because you're just not that kind of person. I can relate.

A couple of things: "the color of the aisle carpeting aisles was black." - too many aisles

"watching the vaudeville actors on performing on stage." - too many "on"s

What beautiful memories! I remember when at age nine, my friend Carol and I would take the bus downtown, go to the library, have lunch at Woolworth's and take the bus back home. No one ever thought about being kidnapped or molested. I guess we truly grew up in the age of innocence. Thank y'all for bringing back memories.

Enjoyed your description of the "cinemuck" and how you got caught the one time you did wrong. Your mom probably asked for that beam of light - she was watching! (I even know moms who pray for their kids to always be caught if they did wrong.) Thanks for this delightful recounting of nostalgia. We saw those Saturday morning cartoons in our houses.

I found it hilarious that you commented that there were people "who do not realize that they were conceived because of a cartoon extravaganza!"
Best wishes in the contest!

Mary,

This brought back so many fun memories for me, too. I vividly remember one time my whole family was leaving the theater (really weird, cause my dad NEVER went) and there was such a throng of people I reached for and grabbed my father's hand. Man, that felt so much better and SAFE!

We muddled through - all I could see was shirts and pants and I was drug through by that hand that I knew I could trust and followed it blindly. When we neared the doors, I realized it was NOT my father. I'm not sure, but I think the man was as surprised as me. *smile*

Our big nights were Tuesdays for kids. They were such fun. Thanks for reminding me!

beam of light shining on me but is It was from the usher,

Fantastic story - such energy, very descriptive. Children are so horribly messy! I enjoyed your reminiscence and it reminded me of my own experiences as a youngster at the movies, but ours was a new theatre and not an interesting old one like you went to.

i have a few suggestions:

Hordes of kids would fill the sidewalk in front[add a comma after front] pushing and shoving each other

This sentence is rather long and could perhaps be modified a bit:
There were no parents to be found in the crowd as for they had the opportunity to be kid-free for a few hours, and I bet there are a few people now who do not realize that they were conceived by a cartoon extravaganza!

My suggested changes:
There were no parents to be found in the crowd - they had the opportunity to be kid-free for a few hours. I bet there are a few people now who do not realize that they were conceived because of a cartoon extravaganza!

Once the doors opened, like a swarm of locusts, we would attack the candy stand.
I think this sentence would read better if it were rearranged:
Once the doors opened, we would attack the candy stand like a swarm of locusts.

I never missed a Saturday at the Central Square Theatre regardless of the movie showing.
Perhaps rearrange this so the sentence does not start with 'I' (because the next one does too).
Regardless of the movie showing, I never missed a Saturday at the Central Square Theatre.

or we laugh[laughed] out loud at the wise-cracking magpies,

from those in the balcony, as well as,[remove this comma] from the back rows.

However, I was proven right about the beam of light shining on me but is It was from the usher, who then escorted me out of the theater with his hand on the back of my neck.
i think this could be tightened up into 2 sentences:
However, I was proven right about the beam of light shining on me. It was from the usher, who then escorted me out of the theater with his hand on the back of my neck.

In places in the story there are changes of tense from the current to the past that I found confusing at times. Check for consistency.

This is a fun story - i enjoyed it very much. I also loved those cartoons and the variety of sweets we could get sick on.

It's a shame that no preservation group rescued the theater from being demolished, Mary. I enjoyed your account of 'Cartoon Saturday.' I could see the swarms of kids waiting to get inside and then rushing to the counter then to seats. The popcorn barrage was funny. We have a 1930's theater that hosts ' Summer Mummers.' You are expected to throw popcorn throughout the show and people do.
Thanks for sharing your fun memories.
Respectfully, Jan

Oh my gosh, what a wonderful memory. I was one of those kids swarming the local theatre on a Saturday afternoon, with my dime clutched in my hand, eager to enjoy the latest offering. So sweet of you to send me down memory lane to retrieve those memories. Thanks.
