This certainly brought back memories. We had a theater like this in my small home town. The kids walked without adults to and from. I was so sad when they closed it although I was then an adult. This is well written and I enjoyed it.

I agree that it is sad when these old theatres close.

This was in the 1960's but my brother and I, and a group of kids would always go to the Saturday Matinee. Our parents would give us money for the movie and snacks, but we always had to have enough left over for the Sunday School collection plate. LOL After the theater closed we moved to the skating rink. Those were good times. Thank you for sharing this memory.

Oh, the times I had at the Victoria Operahouse in Dayton, Ohio, watching Vincent Price scare the crap out of me. And yes, the cartoons were amazing. What a wonderfully written story. Best of luck with your writing!
Have a great day and God bless.
mike
P.S. I miss Hot Tamales!

Well Mary Vigasin, I will tell you how much fun while reading about the Saturday the Cartoon Extravaganza I found your short story was fun to read, you have a wonderful way to describe what the theater looked on a Saturday. And along with all the greasy and sticky food and playing some kind of game fun with the popcorn

We had Saturday cinema for children in the UK back in my day, it's a shame they don't still do it. But I suppose kids can get so much more on their iPads etc these days. I think our times were much more fun. I had to laugh when you mentioned the light picking you out in the dark if you did something wrong, isn't that the way of it! Lol. Your story brought back many memories, Mary, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

I absolutely love this story. I too, went to Saturday afternoon cartoon theatre. Everything was the same as you described except the wild and noisy children never threw popcorn and candy off the balcony or toward the front row. The floor however, was a nasty, sticky mess. My sisters and I loved it. Your story took me back. Thanks for the memory.

Great story. I can feel my own feet sticking to that carpet and feel the relief of the counter workers when the hoards took their seats. You've done a wonderful job of not only describing the building and cartoon & popcorn loving kids. You've also left me with a real "feel" for the place and time.
Well done.

The theater in the picture looks just like the one that was in our small town when I was growing up. Few small town theaters still exist. The story is so much like it was in days when I too loved going to movies. I enjoyed it.

Vivid! Brilliantly evocative--I can see and taste each of those candies--I cringe at the sight of that sticky, littered carpet. I picture the pelting during the show!

I have the same memories. You did a great job of taking me back to that time in my childhood. I always wanted to eat my popcorn and not throw it. I really liked your ending. Finally, I'm now craving Hot Tamales.
