Hello Yvonne.

It is a remarkable story. You told in very well with all the detail. One thing I want to mention is that four dollars for a doll during the depression was a lot of money.

It's a great story and I think it's wonderful you will pass that on to your granddaughters.

Robert

Yes, it was a lot of money. That's what made my grandmother actions so special. Thanks, Robert.

Edna - if only she could talk, it would be such an interesting conversation - a precious link with the past and family history and a talisman for future generations - a delightful read

WOW! This is a well written and heart-warming story. I enlarged the picture of Edna on my computer, and she still looks quite good, considering her age. This story almost brought tears to my eyes as I thought of a little girl whose mom made such a sacrifice to please her little girl. Best wishes in the contest.

A charming story from another age when times were hard. Some great stories came out of that period particularly from America. Steinbeck is probably best known but I am sure there were others. Edna was the new kid on the block back then. This was a well written little true tale of survival.

Thank you, Jim. I appreciate that. It was the days of sacrifice in so many ways, and the purchase of a doll might have been an extravagance, but it meant so much to a little girl.

Your did an awesome job, Yvonne, with your entry. The fact that she is in the condition described speaks to the love and care you and your mother gave this precious doll. You did a great job describing her purchase. That alone speaks to the love of family who went out their way to buy her for your mother. You are right about the memories Edna could share. But you have yours with her and that is what's important, along with the fact that you shared her history with others. I loved reading about this precious heirloom. Edna is more than an antique doll. She is a valued member of your family.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

Awe, Yvonne, this is the sweetest thing I've read for a very long time. How wonderful is that. It's a lovely true story and may Edna be passed on to many more generations.
The years have taken their toll on some of Edna's feature, = The years ... of Edna's features,
Good luck. Ulla:)))

A very touching tale, of dreams, wants ,reality and the love of a parent to give a child what she needs, beyond food and shelter. I remember lay-away, back then that was how my mother bought everything we wore. I think it's gone now. Too bad. It taught you how to save, and wait.

Yes, it did. Now everything is instant gratification which I think takes half the fun of getting something, the anticipation. Thank you for a wonderful review.

I love this story, Yvonne! Virtual six! I hope you do well in the contest.
These are the kinds of stories that make us think what is so precious. It's not just the doll but that sacrificial love your grandmother had. And who in this day and age understands the value of a penny or even waiting 16 weeks paying a quarter a week, investing in a child's future? I hope your granddaughters will value this doll for all she symbolizes!

I'm glad you saw the underlying story of sacrifice. Everything these days is immediate and so few understand the waiting on something which can be half the fun. Of course, Mother knew nothing about this incident until Christmas Day (which was also her birthday), but I know what joy it brought my grandmother to do this for her.

This is such an important family history piece particularly for what it teaches in our immediate gratification society.
