Hi Cassie,
This poem fills the heart with anxiety and suspense. Bad news coming with the hoofbeats of horses. What could be wrong?
The repetition of this line is quite effective,
"Galloping, galloping through the night"
It reminds me of the apprehension I felt as a boy when we read "Someone" by Walter de la Mare.

"Someone came knocking
At my wee, small door;
Someone came knocking;
I'm sure-sure-sure;
I listened, I opened,
I looked from left to right,
But naught there was a stirring
In the still dark night;
Only the busy beetle
Tap-tapping in the wall,
Only from the forest
The screech-owl's call,
Only the cricket whistling
While the dewdrops fall,
So I know not who came knocking,
At all, at all, at all."

Thanks for sharing this poem. I really enjoyed it.
Hugs,
Kimbob

    Walter de la Mare was (and still is) an absolute favourite of mine. I know this poem and loved its air of mystery and "oddness." Fancy you picking this piece!! Thank you for your review and the five stars.
    There is another equally eerie poem that puts a cold finger on the nape of my neck .Also by the immortal Walter, it's called Ghost.You probably know of it. But you may like to look it up, just for the feeling of eerieness. He was a wonderful poet, wasn't he? Thank you for the chat.So nice to speak to someone who enjoys the same things as me
    cheers Cass

Isn't it fun how things from our youth can spur our pen today...? ;) Love the rhythm of this one and the aura of uncertainty the 'horsemen' instill! ;) Thanx for sharing, my lady!! ;) Yvette

    Dear Yvette, Thank you for your review and the five stars. Do you know, it was fun to recall those days 70 years ago? The song itself and what it meant to us in our unknowing 9and a half year old existence(s). It makes growing old worthwhile. cheers Cass

Thank you for sharing this interesting song. Did you change the lyrics to make it a poem? I was curious about the formatting into four shorter lines and two longer lines when the four lines could have been just two longer lines. I like the dactylic meter which is reminiscent of galloping!

    Dear Helen, thank you for your review and the five stars. The only "change" to the lyrics comes from composing the last two verses, which I no longer remember. As for construction and format????
    don't ask ME darlin'.La Muse ( she who must be obeyed)dictates such

There is such a unique melody in this poem that I heard the thudding of those horses hooves in the night either riding by or stopping to bring bad news, an intriguing write with much impact on the reader, a skilfully written and enjoyable poem, love dolly x

    Dear Dolly, Thank you for your review and the five stars. We used to have fun singing this on Friday afternoons during sewing lessons. I had/have a deep voice, so I was sometimes invited to sing (solo) some parts that were especially dramatic. Great fun and quite an honour. I could "ham it up" a bit to emphasise the drama, although as you say the song has plenty going for it in that respect. cheers Cass

What a marvellous poem, who can know quite what's going on, but I love the language, as if one can hear the galloping horses as they thunder across the ground, well done beautifully written Cass. Blessings Roy

    Dear Roy Thank you for your review and the five stars. This was a favourite song in year five. Miss Snow our teacher used to encourage us to sing it together during Friday afternoon sewing class. We would soon exhaust the school curriculum songs and get into other songs from the "wireless" Thems were the days alright. cheers Cass

Enjoy indeed. I loved that you developed this a way that brought suspense. I could almost feel the tension as the hoofbeats got closer.
I liked the way you kept using galloping galloping throughout the poem. I could almost hear it. It took my imagination up up and away. Then in the end, relief as the sound dissipated. Wow. What a rush.

Great poem. Thanks for sharing.

    Dear Sharon, Thank you for your review and the five stars. This was a favourite with us girls. As we learned the words the full import of the hidden menace bore in on us, and several lassies were visibly affected. MIss Snow our teacher was wise in the ways of 9-10 year old little girls and kept at it until everyone had recovered their
    equilibrium. My grand daughter is a teacher now,and I wonder what her response to tearful students would be. cheers Cass

Masterful reconstruction--seamless segue from original two verses to your contributions--kudos for attribution in notes--great backstory!

Cass,

It kinda concerns me that you didn't write the first two verses yourself... but you did mention that in your notes. Hmmm... I don't know all the rules on these things, so I'll leave all that alone and just tell you I am glad you brought this to our attention AND your additions were absolutely lovely. Haunting, isn't it?

Thanks!

    Dear Robyn, Thank you for your review and the five stars.
    Yes, I too wondered about authorship.I have an absolute horror of plagiarism, but I decided with the accompanying notes that all would
    be well. Thank you also for your generous comments on the two verses I composed.You are very kind. cheers Cass

    Dear Amada, Thank you for your review and the five stars.This song was a great favourite with Miss Snow our teacher and us girls too.
    We used to ask if we could "have a song" during sewing class on Friday afternoons. We'd start with "Galloping" and end up with all the "Hit Paraders" from the radio. Great fun. My sewing was a mess, but my voice wasn't half bad. Memories Eh what cheers Cass

This Mystery and Crime Poem speaks a nice tale; sound of hoofing, hoofing and hoofing, three horsemen riding horses go and go on, someone is waiting to hear their plight at the night, a fearful message; galloping goes on... well said, well done; thanks for sharing this. ALCREATOR
