I guess it all started when I noticed the humming birds fighting with some yellow jackets at the feeder[.]

To distract the wasps I put some pancake syrup on a plate and put [it] out on the deck corner.

That sounds like a daring experience. Were you not afraid of being stung? I had a bad reaction to a wasp sting once and so keep as far away from them as I can.
