Rioters take to the street to disrespect our nation by creating havoc everywhere. It is time for everyone to step back and get a new perspective on life instead of trying to tear tear lives apart in unrest. We need to find a common ground to end this horrible out come. The problem just won't fix itself. We must come together and unite and respect our flag and each other.People quit creating caous.

Hello Jaybird, a good poem asking a relevant question 'How long can we, this freedom keep? Tis is very well written in very good aabb rhyme. You fear for your country - I don't think you are alone in that respect, but you have worded your poetry with words that indicate you are full of hope.
The poem is well constructed with eight syllables per line throughout. The couplet line 'The fear I have causes me to weep-' - maybe 'caused' would keep the eight syllable line - but a mere detail on a very good, well written poem. Warm regards Dorothy x

Nicely done. Is this a sonnet? I live in Appalachia also, in the eastern part of TN that was once the State of Franklin. In your third stanza, the word "symbol" is misspelled.

I don't people understand what freedom is. I believe freedom is being able to love God, and each other, but when some think freedom is imposing that on my neighbour, then that freedom becomes anarchy. But beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

I agreed with your thoughts in this well crafted poem.
We are facing troubling times, I believe, but hopefully there are enough
patriotic and sensible people to see that things don't go too wrong.

Jaybird1,
This poem is full of pain and hope. Congratulations!
I don't read a lot of poetry and understand the poetic license, so the spelling of 'blest' made sense. Why 'symbal' though? Just curious.
Thanks for sharing.

Very thoughtful and insightful poem. We do need to be more reflective in our direction. The hate speech and lies only poison the country's well being.
As usual, I appreciate your wisdom.

Mary

You are so right that these are troubled times and you expressed that thought eloquently in your poem:
"How long can we, this freedom keep?"
Thank you for sharing.

It does seem that deep thought is missing. Some of the policies that are being cancelled and others being introduced are downright stupid. God help those who are being unfairly targeted by opinionated companies and Social Media.
