That distressing moment when the soul prepares to depart from the body..... The story is inspiring. It communicate a message of the lonely journey at death. Your family can't go with you; is personal, so I guess this is the most painful aspect of it. Very beautiful story. Congratulations already

I hope too that there is rebirth after this life is over. This piece leaves me, the reader, counting the blessings I have and wonder about what will happen when it is time to move on.

Unfortunately your story reflects what has been too common an occurrence this past year - people dying alone and sad. Well written. Best wishes for the contest.

This is so sad--to be alone and die alone. You did a good job with your contest entry, Mystery Author. Your story told is precise for the space allowed. The picture is a great pairing, too.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes, Jan

In the midst of this pandemic, I have heard many people not on
ventilators say they are ready to "go home" or they are ready for
the "Second Coming." When my father was dying from lung cancer
he asked for the pulmonology technologist to stop coming because
it was just too hard for him to find a few minutes of hope, then lose it.
Good luck in this contest.

How adroitly you climbed inside the mind and thoughts of the lonely, dispossessed, near-dead. Where your only reality is the machine that keeps your lungs inflated. As death creeps up your bed you cherish in your heart the prayer of the eternal optimist: While you can't stop the inevitable, you hold out the prayer for a do-over.

I like this hundred-worder. It should do well in the contest.

Very evocative piece that bravely deals with a subject many people do not want to face. I particularly liked 'The shadow of death creeping, creeping up my bed.' Might want to do a bit more research on Buddhism and reincarnation though; there's no guarantee that we will be re-born in human form,

I believe you are correct. But for this piece the idea of rebirth gives hope. To most reincarnation means being reborn in human form and that hey may have lived decades or centuries in the past. I took liberty of using the common belief of most people. In her book, "I'm Over All That," Shirley MacLaine shares her thoughts on reincarnation and reveals several past lives she believes she's had.

Interesting that Shirley's past 'lives' are all intersting and exotic ;-) No-one ever seems to be a reincarnation of someone who used to clean toilets. Just sayin'.

Can't disagree with that. My point is that most people think of reincarnation as coming back as a human.

This story is wonderfully written, especially during this pandemic. I liked the words, "That I have hope that I will be again."
This piece brings emotions of sadness because of loneliness for some but it also brings the feelings of hope and peace.

This sickness (China Virus) has taken to many lives and do we have a light at the end of the tunnel?
I suppose I am blessed, I tested negative.
I hope you make a speedy recovery.
