What a funny one-liner. Can you imagine what would be going through one's mind seeing that as an epitaph on her gravestone? Sounds like she was a very bright woman whose wit worked well with irony.

She was dead serious! (wishful -thinking aka denial.)

That's a bittersweet story about Dora. Your narrative of her life is grandmotherly but the resolution of the story is sad but inevitable. Her comment about her son is a show stopper in the writing. It brought a smile.

It's always a sad time when anyone passes, unlike what many might say about being thankful they are headed to a new life. Ninety-nine years is a good long life, but once they've passed, their time on this earth is through. So, I'm sorry about all those left to morn the loss.

Condolences, I like how you put the idea of moving to heaven here:"We'd expected to celebrate her Big One-Oh-Oh ten months hence. A pair of heart attacks in quick succession has put paid to party plans." Thank you for sharing and have a peaceful day.

A heartfelt and heartbreaking story. I have enjoyed reading your story, but it is sad at the ending. I like how you structured this story. Excellent work! Thanks for sharing!

Sorry to hear about Dora's passing. But snuggled up with "Morpheus" (I'm guessing this means she's on high doses of morphine), I hope her passing was peaceful.
has put paid to party plans. (I didn't understand this part. Is it an idiom?)
I also didn't understand the "terrible accident." Did her son and someone else have a child?

"Put paid to" means to cancel--I just learned it is a British idiom--don't know where I picked it up.

I mean that her son got his fiance pregnant so they "had to get married" ahead of schedule.
(Re the one-time "accident"--Wishful-thinking on her part aka denial.)

Too bad she couldn't have made it to her 100th. More and more people are seeing that age these days. Love the quotation from her that you cited. It would be worthy of so many of those soap opera characters who engage in the same behavior. Engaging post, and sorry to hear of Dora's passing. judi

This Flash Fiction is nicely written to pay a tribute to Dora, your mother-in-law, age 99, with a twist; well said, well done; thanks for sharing this. ALCREATOR

Well she lived to ripe old age and it's too bad she did have the privilege of making a 100. I can imagine my Mother-in-law saying something like that and not thinking it was funny at all. LOL. I wonder how she knew they only did it once. I'm not sure I'd trust that info.

You're not saying she was right, are you? Heh heh. My mother would lie to others right in front of us, to say some sort of face, but we knew, and so did she, she was lying. It didn't seem to matter that we knew, as long as a perfect stranger didn't. Never quite figured that one. Well done Liz, blessings Roy
