Congratulations on being recognized. So sorry for your loss. I truly love my mother and father-in-law and they still consider me family although my darling husband has passed.

As soon as I finished the piece, my daughter gave me the news. (Wishful-thinking on her part aka denial.)

My father and mother were 97 = one wished to see the 100, the other did not. One always had stories to tell and the other just wisdom and a word to the wise. Appears Dora might have had a touch of both. I appreciate your vocabulary - you've expanded my mind this morning. My sincere condolences for your loss, but I'm sure Dora is celebrating somewhere.

Hi Liz,
I'm sorry to hear of Dora's passing. It's a shame shoe didn't make it to 100. But 99 is still a nice figure. I'd be happy to live that long ...if I don't outlive my kids, and if I have my wits. It sounds like Dora was a sharp old gal.
Our bodies wear out. If we abuse them with alcohol and cigarettes, they'll definitely wear out quicker. It's sad to get old. I look back sometimes and wonder where the years have gone.
But you are quite a raconteur, Liz. Don't sell yourself short.
"They only did it once and it was a terrible accident." ... the highlight of your eulogy! But how did Dora know that they only did it once? Surely she didn't take the word of her son. I can tell already that he's a terrible liar. Nobody does it just once! I assume she ended up pregnant, and the grandchild must have been a snotty little brat she didn't take to. But, God love her, she tooted all her other grandchildren's horns.
It's a sad affair when anyone passes. My condolences.
Hugs,
Kimbob

He was her first and thus her favorite grandson!

Where does one begin?? This is a hilarious delicious tidbit.
It's so nice that you were able to appreciate your mother-in-law despite her son being your ex. I bet she loved you too.

I think you do have it in you to be a raconteur; it's making noises and wants to come out! Go for it LOL

Yes, that's some one liner. Makes you wonder how would she know they only did it once. I know from experience men and women have different forms of math when it comes to that stuff.

It is always nice to have fond memories that live on.

So sorry for your loss, Liz. I love your little remembrance of her. Wonderful that she defended her son, rather than blamed him. Well written. I was blessed with three mothers-in-law (only one "official") and it was hard to say goodbye to all of them.

I swear you and I share the same warped sense of what constitutes a eulogy! I cracked up! Reminds me one Thanksgiving long ago when two many "chefs" were in the kitchen and suddenly we reached despair when it
was to strain the turkey broth in order to make gravy--but alas, not a single bowl or pan to be found! My own beloved grandmother (who-we did not realize it then was in early stages of dementia)--cheerfully smiled and said:

"Don't worry! We can just keep it in the sieve!"

(Yes, I did include that in her eulogy when she passed at age 98--and yes, everyone chuckled!)

Keep the gravy in the sieve--priceless!

An original and creative reflection on your ex-mother-in-law, and I am sorry to hear the news of her death. You twist all the conventions, but in doing so retain your honesty and remain true to yourself and your own perceptions.

Sorry to hear about Dora's passing. I'm sure she left behind scads of memories for those remaining. Sounds like she was a real unforgettable character.

Quick-witted Liz,

I'm amazed yet again at your ability to take a serious, sad situation and add a tasteful twist of humor. "They only did it once and it was a terrible accident!" HA.

Since I struggle with vocabulary and sayings, I googled this phrase: put paid to party plans. Guess where it originated? Britain!!! :)

I lack words for situations such as this, I'm going to give you the customary saying: Sorry for your loss. :(
